A huge part of a successful renovation is choosing the right insulation. It’s the difference between a room that’s "usable" and a room that’s truly comfortable and energy-efficient.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the common options we install for our clients:
1. Mineral Wool (Glass or Rock Wool) - As seen in this project!
Pros: Excellent soundproofing, naturally fire-resistant, and breathable (great for older homes). It’s flexible, so it fits perfectly into timber stud work with no gaps.
Cons: Bulkier than some alternatives, meaning you need deeper studs for high thermal performance.
2. PIR Rigid Foam Boards (e.g., Celotex/Kingspan)
Pros: Incredible thermal performance for its thickness. Perfect for loft conversions where space is at a premium.
Cons: More expensive than wool and requires precise cutting to avoid "thermal bridging" (gaps where heat escapes).
3. Multi-Foil Insulation
Pros: Very thin and acts as a great radiant barrier (reflects heat back into the room). Easy to install over rafters.
Cons: Best used in combination with other types rather than as a standalone solution for modern building regs.
4. Natural Fibres (Sheep’s Wool/Wood Fibre)
Pros: The eco-friendly choice! Completely sustainable, non-toxic, and manages moisture beautifully.
Cons: Generally the highest price point.

A client came to us with a porch that was unfortunately falling down and past the point of repair. They loved the original look, so our mission was clear: rebuild it exactly as it was, but built to last.
