Here’s a recent design for an empty unit on Union Street which has been on my mind — not because it was built, but because of what it represented.
Working closely with the client and Nina Angus of Cushion Interiors we developed a design for a salon that blended architectural clarity with interior warmth and a social aspect. The three images capture the essence of that vision:
• The central circular colour bar — a social anchor designed for conversation, creativity and hospitality.
• The curved forms, warm tones and crafted detailing that shaped a welcoming, client‑focused environment.
• The lounge and reception areas, where materiality, lighting and spatial flow worked together to create a calm, luxurious experience.
Although the project didn’t progress, it remains a strong example of what collaborative design can achieve. By combining architectural strategy with a clear client vision and interior creativity, we produced a concept that was commercially purposeful and socially engaging. We also sought it to align with the ambitions of Aberdeen’s Empty Shop Grant Scheme, which this unit still aims to benefit from.
For me, this project reinforced the value of working closely with talented partners like Nina — blending perspectives, challenging assumptions and creating spaces with real character and intent.
