PLUMBING TIP #1 FOR A STRESS FREE WINTER:
OUTSIDE STOPCOCK ISOLATION
If you don't know how to turn off the mains water outside your home, its time to find out! If you have a burst pipe after a cold snap, you can save a flood! You will either have an old style
tap head, or square nut (diy stores sell a long key,) or a plastic 1/4 turn valve on the side of your water meter, both kinds under a small square metal cover outside in the street, marked "water". Check it turns off, if your not sure, have someone watch the kitchen tap whilst you get dirty - if you can't turn it off, contact your provider, and get them to fix it as soon as, (they are responsible for the supply, right up to the property boundary, to include the isolation point).
Get this 5 minute job done, it will save mess, and money (if you are on a meter). Simply turn off this valve should there be any leaks, it will buy you time to get the offending pipe fixed.
