Osteoarthritis isn’t simply a case of your joints “wearing out”.

Research from our Centre for Osteoarthritis Pathogenesis has shown that osteoarthritis is a complex, active disease involving the whole joint.

Mechanical stress plays an important role, while joint injury, cartilage breakdown and low-grade inflammation can also contribute to how the condition develops. And it’s not just something that happens with age.

There’s still more to discover but understanding what causes is an important step towards developing better treatments in the future.
