Our head office in Runcorn has been busy recently collecting toys for the local Halton Toy Appeal, and the response from the team has been fantastic.

While Christmas can be a joyful occasion for many, we recognise that this isn’t the reality for everyone. With that in mind, it felt important to give something back to the local community and help ensure as many families as possible can enjoy the festive season.

The head office team combined the toy collection with their annual Christmas Jumper Day, raising additional funds that were put towards purchasing even more toys and gifts for the appeal.

The Halton Christmas Toy Appeal is still ongoing, so if you’re based near Runcorn and would like to support a great cause, please visit their page online to find out how you can get involved.

To mark , we sat down with members of the embedded site teams at Solenis Bradford, INEOS Inovyn Runcorn and Engenda Group Manufacturing (Halton Fabrications) to hear their thoughts on the importance and benefits of apprenticeships.

We wanted to speak to the people currently going through their apprenticeships, whether straight from school or later in life, and to the managers who have seen their fair share of apprentices over the last few decades.

Why apprenticeships? Why Engineering? What doors do they open? What does the future hold?

Apprentices are the future of our industry, and we wouldn’t be the company we are without them.

A big thank you to the Engenda apprentices and past apprentices, Brandon Winstone, Jamie Owen, Charlie Wimbleton, James Hemsworth and Leon Walsh.

Also a big thank you to the management team - Wayne Thompson, Steven O'Neale and Lee Lovekin.

What qualities make a great apprentice?

Our team agreed that successful apprentices all have these qualities:

✅ Eagerness to Learn – Showing curiosity and a proactive approach to skills development.
✅ Strong Work Ethic – Committing to tasks, being punctual, and taking work seriously.
✅ Adaptability – Learning from experiences and adjusting to different challenges.
✅ Attention to Detail – Taking care in their work to ensure high standards.
✅ Team Player – Collaborating with colleagues and respecting everyone’s role.
✅ Positive Attitude – Staying motivated and open-minded throughout the learning process.

What are the biggest mistakes apprentices make?

Learning involves making mistakes, but awareness can help apprentices avoid common pitfalls. According to our team, these are the biggest mistakes to watch out for:

❌ Not asking enough questions – If you don’t understand something, ask! It shows interest and initiative.
❌ Not taking initiative – Waiting to be told what to do instead of looking for ways to help.
❌ Ignoring feedback or advice – Constructive feedback is essential for improvement.
❌ Overestimating or underestimating their abilities – Finding the right balance between confidence and caution is key.
❌ Not observing and learning from others – Watching skilled colleagues can teach just as much as hands-on work.
❌ Avoiding challenges – Growth happens outside your comfort zone.

Apprenticeships are the foundation of a strong and skilled workforce, shaping the next generation of professionals. To mark , we asked members of the team at Solenis, Inovyn and Halton Fabrications for their thoughts on apprenticeships.

To start the week, we asked: how do apprentices contribute to the team?

Apprentices are more than just learners; they bring energy and fresh ideas while helping to keep projects moving efficiently. They said apprentices add value with:

💡 Fresh Perspective – Their curiosity and enthusiasm spark innovation, often bringing new ways of thinking to the team.
🛠️ Support for Routine Tasks – By handling essential technical tasks, apprentices free up experienced colleagues to focus on more complex work.
📚 Willingness to Learn – A strong desire to develop means apprentices are receptive to feedback and quickly adapt to the team’s working style.
🚀 Developing Future Talent – Training apprentices ensures a pipeline of skilled professionals who already understand the company’s culture and operations.

While apprentices require training, those who are well-integrated quickly become valuable assets to any team.

🚨 New skills hub launched bringing 5,000 more construction apprenticeship places 🚨

5,000 more construction apprenticeship places will be made available per year thanks to a £140m industry investment.

A total of 32 new Homebuilding Skills Hubs will deliver fast-track training to local areas that need more housing, while giving apprentices vital skills to boost housebuilding in the UK.

The government is working with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and the National House-Building Council (NHBC) to launch the purpose built hubs, which will provide a realistic working environment for training for key construction trades, including bricklayers, roofers, plasterers, scaffolders, electricians, carpenters and more.

The fast-track apprenticeships offered can be completed in 12-18 months, up to half the time of a traditional 24-30 month construction apprenticeship, meaning more construction workers can be trained quickly and into highly skilled jobs.

Tim Balcon, Chief Executive of CITB said:

"It's clear that we need to rethink how we train our workforce and be much more agile in our approach. We have worked closely with the homebuilding industry and government to develop a programme that is focused on equipping individuals with the skills they need to be productive on site, in the most efficient way. This is truly a collaborative approach and one we are very excited about.

This investment to launch 32 Homebuilding Skills Hubs will help meet the homebuilding targets while flattening peaks in demand for construction skills on homebuilding across the country."
