Another day, another disappointing installation by a Gas Safe registered business. ( 4 year old install)

Called out to carry out a boiler service as the customer is in the process of selling their home. During the inspection, I discovered this shocking piece of pipework.

It appears the gas pipe was soldered after the condensate pipe had already been installed. The heat from soldering so close to the plastic condensate pipe could easily have damaged it.

Fortunately for both the customer and the original installer, it hadn't worn through the copper gas pipe and caused a pinhole gas leak.

Quality workmanship matters. Cutting corners doesn't.

It's worrying to think that some installers believe this standard of work is acceptable.

We were recently called to a property after Cadent attended following reports of a gas-like smell. After carrying out their checks, they isolated the gas supply due to excessive Products of Combustion (POC) leaking from the boiler flue.

The boiler was only 2 years old.

To gain access, we first had to cut away part of a pre-existing kitchen cupboard, how they even managed to install it is anyones guess !

Once the flue was removed, the cause became clear. The flue had been left with sharp, burred metal edges that had never been properly cleaned or finished during installation. These sharp edges damaged the flue seals, eventually causing them to fail and allowing products of combustion to leak.

New flue supplied and installed.Full safety checks completed.Boiler tested and confirmed to be operating safely and correctly.

This is why it's so important to have gas appliances installed correctly by a competent Gas Safe engineer. A boiler may look fine from the outside, but poor workmanship can take years to show itself—and when it does, it can become a serious safety issue.

Thankfully the particular company that installed this has gone into liquidation.
