Big day changing out an old consumer unit today. A lot of planning goes into these jobs—from checking the existing wiring to planning the layout—but when it’s done properly, the upgrade is smooth, safe, and efficient.

A new consumer unit means better protection for your home and family, reduced risk of electrical faults, and compliance with current electrical safety regulations. It also future-proofs your property for EV chargers, solar, and other modern upgrades.

For this install, I fitted a modern metal consumer unit with individual safety protection on each circuit, added surge protection to protect appliances, clearly labelled everything, and carried out full testing with certification provided. Clean, tidy finish and minimal disruption.

Long day on site, but really happy with the finish and another property made safer.

Today’s job started with carrying out an EICR in preparation for a full consumer unit swap-out. Always important to assess the existing installation first—checking earthing and bonding, insulation resistance, polarity, and overall condition of the circuits.

The report helps identify any issues that need rectifying before the new board goes in, ensuring everything is safe, compliant, and ready for the upgrade.

Next step: tidy up any faults, confirm test results, and then on to the consumer unit change. Safety first, paperwork second, then the upgrade 👍
