Sounds like the guides were correct all along, despite all this it’s difficult to see the path the NCMM is taking changing whilst the trustees & SLT are in place. No underground tours since August 2025, yet they still claim monies as a charity based along supporting the heritage of coal mining. Wake up Minister for heritage to this misuse of funds

National Coal Mining Museum Warned by Charity Commission

The Charity Commission has confirmed it will issue formal regulatory advice to trustees at the National Coal Mining Museum following concerns raised by staff during the long-running dispute. The guidance will cover areas including risk assessment, legal compliance and acting in the best interests of the charity.

This is an important outcome. Workers raised concerns about governance and decision-making, and the Charity Commission's intervention shows those concerns warranted serious scrutiny.

UNISON Yorkshire & Humberside regional organiser Rianne Hooley said, "The Charity Commission findings will help ensure the National Coal Mining Museum is managed appropriately and safeguard its long-term future."

The National Coal Mining Museum is a national asset and a vital part of our mining heritage. We welcome any steps that strengthen accountability and help protect its future for staff, visitors and mining communities alike.

Health & Safety Manager sacked for whistleblowing over safety concerns. Deputy Mine Manager sacked for raising concerns over unsafe practices.
Is this somewhere you’d feel safe taking your children/grandchildren/pupils?

The National Coal Mining Museum for England is in crisis. It is being run down and grossly mismanaged. Staff are leaving in droves and the underground tour is yet to be reinstated after the strike that ended almost 3 months ago. We are now in the second main school holiday period where parents have not been able to take their children to enjoy the mining experience. Will it ever reopen? Is there any leadership? It would appear not. The Charity Commission must take firm action or it will soon be beyond saving.

Neil Williams was sacked from his role as health and safety manager at the National Coal Mining Museum in December.

It was after he raised a number of health and safety concerns, and was photographed at a rally supporting striking workers.

He's submitting a claim for unfair dismissal.

Not the only H & S concerns at the museum, staff are being asked to carry out unsafe practices by Management. Good job the mine guides have a backbone and concerns over safety issues that could impact on public safety.

How can the CEO who’s responsible for this be so stupid & brash with just 1 head ( although it is a very large one!,)

The National Coal Mining Museum for England seems to think it's exempt from employment law.

Here's a little story I've heard.

An employee was on maternity leave. The museum brought someone in on maternity cover. The employee returned from maternity leave. The museum retained the person providing maternity cover. They have now made the person who returned from maternity leave redundant. Oh and the person who has taken her job is (wait for it) a Prospect union representative!

If this is true I hope the woman who's been made redundant is a union member (not Prospect obviously) and she sues the museum. If she isn't then she can still sue them and needs to lodge a claim with ACAS. Good luck to her.
