I thought collecting rainwater was complicated and expensive 😅 Turns out it's one of the simplest things I've ever set up — and it's saved me so much money on my water bill while making my plants noticeably happier. If you water a garden, this is worth doing. Save this! 💧

It was a start, but we needed more than that 🌧️ didn't we? In the meantime, we should act sensibly with watering. Even if you're not on a water meter.

💦 Be very selective in what you’re choosing to water. If you think something will survive, leave that and focus on newly planted things.
💦 Water right to the roots. Never have a hosepipe spraying on the whole border. It will sit on the leaves and evaporate.
💦 Water with a watering can – it will make your watering more targeted.
💦 Install a water meter. You’ll be more likely to use water wisely.
💦 Install rain water butts from your house drainpipes.
💦 Use grey water – recycled water from washing machines and baths – only on established plants and not on fruit and veg.
💦 Water in the morning or evening when it’s cool, otherwise you will loose lots to evaporation. Here's more on when to water in hot weather.

Please heed this advice if you have compost bins🙏🏻

I have been asked by a lovely fireman to remind everyone with a compost heap to dampen them down .

Reports of them spontaneously combusting are rising .

This includes the mound of grass clippings down the bottom of the garden and manure piles .

If you see a pile smouldering , DO NOT break it open .

Increased oxygen will cause it to burst into flames .

Dampen down with a hose pipe etc .
Don’t worry about a hose pipe ban , it’s an emergency .

Call the fire brigade if the fire is spreading or if there are open flames .

Better still , go and stick some water on it now to ensure it’s not on the verge of combustion.

Am I being dramatic ? Hardly . Back in 2022 in Wennington , a compost fire devestated the village .

Those lawns WILL recover👍🏻

If, like the cricket pitch, your grass is burnt entirely brown with not a blade of green grass, don't worry. And don't waste water on it! I assure you it will recover full greenness very quickly once we get some rain.
