🌊 Discover the new plan to help heal the Sussex sea

Sussex Bay is bringing people together to discuss part two of its Blueprint for Seascape Recovery, and you’re invited to join the conversation.

On Tuesday 20th October at 7pm, Sussex Bay will be hosting an online webinar, featuring talks from its seascape recovery lead, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Sussex Dolphin Project and Harbour Oysters. The webinar is focused on continuing the conversation about the region's first ever blueprint for seascape recovery.

We’re particularly pleased to see Samantha Smithson from Friends of Adur SSSI joining the line-up to share a community perspective on protecting and restoring the Adur Estuary in Shoreham.

As a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the estuary is recognised for its nationally important saltmarsh habitats and wildlife, and is a vital feeding and resting place for migratory birds.

We are proud to be the host organisation for Sussex Bay, a collaborative project working to help restore our marine ecosystem. Stretching from Selsey Bill to Camber Sands, it’s supported by dozens of organisations, including councils, ecological partners and universities. While supported by the public sector, the project is externally funded.

Sussex Bay is leading or assisting with dozens of projects across the county, including initiatives benefiting our coastline and communities, such as Southwick Reef at Shoreham Port and a net recycling scheme for local fishers.

Together with more than 40 organisations, researchers, practitioners and communities, Sussex Bay has developed part two of the Blueprint, bringing together 126 proposed actions to help nature recover across 100 miles of Sussex coastline.

Running from Saturday 23 October to Sunday 1 November, (10am to 2pm weekdays, 10am to 4pm weekends), the hunt costs just £1 per child, with a sweet treat for every entry. Three lucky winners will also get a £10 voucher!

Adur River Recovery reaches a major milestone!

Twenty-seven farms and estates across Sussex are one step closer to a 30-year vision to recover the River Adur and mitigate flooding, following the UK government’s indication that it is willing to allocate £42 million to the Adur River Recovery Project.

From Knepp to the Shoreham estuary, the project aims to recover over 25km of river habitat and revive floodplains, wetlands and saltmarsh, creating a resilient corridor within a working, farmed landscape.

By allowing the river to function more naturally, the project will improve water quality, create vital habitats for wildlife and make the landscape more resilient to the growing risks of climate change, including flooding and drought.

After three years coordinating the project’s development, we’re delighted that this milestone brings the project closer to delivery. The team is now working towards a final implementation agreement with government, with delivery works intended to begin in spring 2027, subject to agreement.
