It’s always rewarding to revisit projects that formed part of the early days of JTDS Architecture.

We recently had the opportunity to return to a project at Union Street, Bishop’s Castle, within the town’s historic Conservation Area. The scheme involved demolishing a redundant attached outbuilding and creating a sympathetic two-storey annexe, enabling the client to care for an elderly relative while still providing a degree of independence.

Working within a conservation area required careful consideration of the building’s scale, materials and relationship with the surrounding streetscape. The design sought to respect the character of the existing property while delivering practical, modern accommodation for the family.

It was great to see the completed project still sitting comfortably within its surroundings and continuing to meet the client’s needs.

🏆 We’re delighted to announce that JTDS Architecture has been named a double winner in the BUILD Architecture Awards 2026!

We have received the following awards:

BUILD Excellence in Sustainable Architectural Design 2026 – England & Wales

Best SEND Education Design Project 2026 (Midlands) – Pegasus School

We are incredibly proud to receive this recognition, particularly for our work at Pegasus School for SENAD Group. The project has provided us with the opportunity to develop a thoughtful and sustainable design that responds to the specific needs of SEND pupils, while respecting the sensitive setting of the Grade II* listed Caldwell Hall.

We would like to extend our sincere thanks to SENAD Group for appointing and trusting us to help develop this important project, as well as to the wider consultant team and everyone who has supported the scheme so far.

The official Architecture Awards 2026 publication, press release and winners list will be released by BUILD during the week commencing 10 August 2026.
A fantastic achievement for our practice and a very proud moment for the JTDS team.

✨ Sneak Peek: Sustainable Rural Home in Progress 🌿
We’re excited to share an early glimpse of an upcoming project currently in development—an exemplar of sustainable rural design set within a sensitive AONB landscape.
This scheme adopts a fabric-first approach, incorporating high levels of natural insulation to minimise heat loss and improve overall energy performance. Passive design strategies—including careful orientation, generous roof overhangs, and controlled openings—are used to maximise daylight and natural ventilation, reducing reliance on mechanical systems.
The design has evolved through close collaboration, using initial concepts as a foundation and refining them to enhance clarity, functionality, and planning compliance. The result is a cohesive, well-integrated proposal that responds positively to both the landscape setting and planning policy constraints.
Key features include:
A layout shaped by client engagement, offering flexibility in use (e.g. adaptable bedroom/office spaces)
A building form partially set into the slope, improving buildability and reducing visual impact
A curved roof profile inspired by agricultural forms, helping the extension sit more comfortably within its rural context
A strong focus on reducing operational and embodied carbon, alongside delivering biodiversity enhancements and long-term climate resilience
The design has also been rigorously tested through ongoing design reviews, including input from planning and architectural professionals, ensuring a robust and thoughtful proposal.
This is just a sneak peek, and we look forward to sharing more as the project progresses.

We’re pleased to share that a planning application has now been submitted for new facilities at Pegasus School, Caldwell, on behalf of SENAD Group.

The proposals include a new specialist teaching pavilion, an agricultural teaching barn and an extension to the existing car park, designed to support the continued growth of this important SEND school. The new spaces will provide calm, flexible learning environments alongside practical land-based teaching facilities that form a key part of the school’s curriculum.

The design has been carefully developed within the historic setting of Caldwell Hall, a Grade II* listed building, ensuring the new buildings sit comfortably within the landscape and remain clearly distinguishable from the historic fabric. A natural materials palette, green roof and landscape-led approach help integrate the development into its woodland surroundings while creating a welcoming environment for students.

The scheme follows a successful pre-application process with the local planning authority, and we were particularly encouraged to receive positive feedback from Historic England, who supported the considered design approach and the role the proposals will play in supporting the long-term educational use of the site.

We look forward to progressing the application and helping deliver facilities that will enhance learning opportunities for students at Pegasus School.
