The Miners’ Memorial Way (see https://www.mining-landscapes.org/news/fife-miners-memorial-way) is currently being mapped (see https://www.mining-landscapes.org/route/121) with the help of Greener Kirkcaldy and volunteers (2nd draft). It will pass through right by the pit head monument close to the station and it would be good to include the story behind it who initiated, designed and funded the project etc.

Before railways, before coaches, before pretty much anything — The Coal Road was one of Dunfermline's main coal highways. Picture long strings of creaking coal carts rattling down this route on their way to Limekilns Harbour, part of a coal-mining tradition here dating all the way back to 1291, when the monks of Dunfermline Abbey were granted rights to dig for coal at Pittencrieff — reputedly among the earliest recorded coal mining in Britain.
In 1793, Lord Elgin revived plans for a wagonway running parallel to Coal Road, through Pittencrieff to the Colton coal depot, to shift coal from his mines beyond Carnock Road. It took nearly 30 years and a legal tangle over land dues, but by 1820 it was built — engineered by Robert Stevenson, grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson. He recorded seeing a single 11½-hundredweight horse haul a load of over 23 tons along these rails.

Art works at QE II Jubilee Park, the repurposed site of the Old Colliery located south west of worked the southern end of the North Welsh coalfield from 1869 to 1880 when it was abandoned due to flood.

New blog uploaded to our collection ‘Pithead’ by our project artist Yvonne Weighand Lyle (YWL Studios) that tells the story of her painting from its original conception back in 1995 at Lady Victoria (National Mining Museum Scotland), its involvement in Yvonne joining the team through to its current home in the Under Secretary of State Kirsty McNeill MP for Midlothian’s Office and all the bits in between.
