Ragwort is covered by the Weeds Act 1959 (which specifies five injurious weeds including common ragwort) and the Ragwort Control Act 2003

Land owners/occupiers are responsible for establishing what level of risk is posed to grazing animals (ie horses & cattle) or forage production.

3 levels of risk Low, Medium and High.

Low risk - ragwort that is present on land more than 100m from animals grazing/forage production

Medium risk - ragwort that is present within 50m -100m from grazing animals/forage production

High risk - ragwort that is present within 50m of grazing animals/forage production.

Ragwort in a high risk area requires immediate action from landowner/occupiers.

Ragwort in a medium risk area should implement a control policy to prevent high risk to grazing animals/forage production.

Reporting injurious weeks - you can ask Natural England to act but only after you have spoken directly to the landowner/occupier.

Ragwort is a biennial plant meaning it grows from seed. For the first growing season it remains in the rosette stage and the second year flowers usually July - October.

Ragwort that is cut from the stem for example topping or not removing from the root is capable of becoming a short lived perennial with a life span of up to 5 years.

Germination occurs in Spring and Autumn. Each plant could produce anywhere from 50,000 - 200,000 seeds. With a germination rate of 70% in favourable conditions. That's a lot more Ragwort for the following year!

It's not too late to start controlling the spread. For some help pulling it up please do get in contact.

Keep your 4 legged loved ones safe from this highly toxic plant.
