Here's the second of five pledges within the Outerspace "Rise Up and Flourish" manifesto rally cry to create places where people and nature thrive:

2. Stand by Community

The most inspiring ideas are often already hiding in plain sight, already held by the people who know a space best. It’s their place, not ours.

Too often, community engagement is treated as a box-ticking exercise that happens once the important decisions have already been made.

In Outerspace we approach community engagement differently. Because we genuinely believe communities hold forms of creative intelligence that planning frameworks alone can never fully reveal.

Local people already understand the rhythms, tensions, memories and emotional truths of a place in ways no spreadsheet or site analysis ever could.

That’s why we see community engagement not as a constraint on creativity, but as one of its richest wellsprings.

Because when communities recognise themselves in a place, they don’t just use it, they belong. And because of that, they help it flourish.

So let’s genuinely engage and Stand by Community

We’re becoming far too used to environments disconnected from nature: streets that trap heat after sunset, sterile urban spaces and places without birdsong, bees, butterflies or beetles.

These environments shape more than aesthetics. They influence how connected, comfortable and alive a place feels. Because we don’t stand outside nature; we live inside it.

As awareness of climate change and ecological decline grows, too much planning and development still treats nature as an afterthought. Planting becomes cosmetic. Ecology becomes compliance.

At Outerspace, we believe that’s backwards.

Nature is not decoration; it’s life-support. Healthy ecosystems cool streets, absorb rainfall, support pollinators, improve air quality and strengthen resilience. Just as importantly, they help people feel calmer, healthier and more connected to the world around them.

Biodiversity and human wellbeing are inseparable.

That’s why we see every project as an opportunity to repair and reconnect fragments of the living world through diverse planting, habitat creation, rain gardens, green corridors and landscapes designed for both ecological and human flourishing.

No single project will save the planet. But enough thoughtful interventions, connected over time, can begin to restore what we’ve slowly been losing.

• Nature is not decoration but life-support
• Ecological health and human wellbeing are inseparable
• Every project is an opportunity for repair and reconnection

In Outerspace we have over 20 years experience in landscape architecture, urban design and community engagement, striving to make spaces and neighbourhoods achieve a genuine sense of belonging.

Today, we’re launching our rebrand. And with it, a clearer position on our deepest purpose.

We believe landscape and urban design should go beyond meeting planning requirements. Our role is to help create places that flourish socially, culturally and ecologically.

Our intentions haven’t changed. But this rebrand makes them explicit: tick-box design is not good enough. Working together, we can all do better.

Our five guiding principles shape everything we do:
• Stand by communities, design through dialogue
• Champion inclusivity from the offset
• Fight for biodiversity, put nature and climate first
• Celebrate the raw spirit of every place
• Cherish every resource, circular is key

This is how we define genuine placemaking, the way we choose to work and how we believe places earn their right to last. Prioritise long-term value over short-term gain

We’ll be sharing more on the thinking behind the rebrand and what it means for our work. But for now, this is what we stand for. We want to align ourselves with clients and consultants that share these values, so if this resonates, we’d love to hear your thoughts.

We are excited that the Southall Community Centre project in Ealing has been granted planning permission.

The landscape proposals for this new mixed-use development comprise a series of usable and exciting spaces for both the wider community at ground floor level and residents on the roof terraces.

At ground level, the design creates a lively civic plaza to the north incorporating informal seating and carefully positioned trees to preserve the view towards the Sunrise Radio Building. A water feature with low jets acts as a focal point and as an inviting gathering space for families and children to play.

The water feature also marks the northern point of the western boundary, which is conceived as a new north-south connection to improve pedestrian circulation. This verdant landscaped street offers a welcome respite from the adjacent trafficked road and integrates playful elements within lush planting. A small tree grove provides shade and creates an intimate space for relaxation and play.

The three roof terraces are designed as green oases for the residents, offering spaces to socialise, relax or play. Tree species selection and their location have been informed by wind analysis, aesthetics, and biodiversity.

Congratulations to all involved!
