Self-Employed General Builders / Subcontract Operatives
Marson Ham Ltd is looking for self-employed general builders to be added to our pool of subcontractors to undertake works on a range of rural, commercial and historic construction projects. Our site work is primarily around Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Shropshire.
This is a good opportunity for someone perhaps early career, recently trained or just starting their business who is keen to develop practical skills and broaden their understanding of the construction industry.
For the right person, there may be an opportunity to move to PAYE employment in the future, subject to performance, reliability and business requirements. There is also scope to learn the commercial and practical realities of running a small construction business, for those with the ambition to grow.
The ideal candidate(s):
• Has demonstrable experience and produces work of a high standard in any of the following: bricklaying, stone masonry, groundworks, drainage, plastering, roofing, traditional leadwork or carpentry
• Has an interest in historic and conservation work, including traditional lime and masonry repairs
• Has experience operating plant and machinery (preferred)
• Holds a full, clean UK driving licence
• Is reliable, punctual and communicative with strong organisational skills
• Has the core kit of tools required for their job
• Is respectful of clients, their property and working relationships
• Can work as part of a small team and independently, showing initiative where appropriate
• Is willing to assist where needed, including maintaining a tidy and organised site
• Is comfortable working outdoors in varied conditions while maintaining high standards
• Understands the importance of health and safety and will work in accordance with project RAMS
• Has at least basic IT literacy skills (email / Microsoft Office)
• Holds a UTR number and will provide formal invoices for BACS payment under the CIS

We are a multi-disciplinary consultancy and contractor, delivering survey, design and building services across commercial, rural and historic sectors.
Suitable candidates will have the opportunity to gain exposure to a wide range of disciplines, depending on interest, including general construction, heritage skills, geomatics and site engineering, architectural CAD and project management.
We are not looking for formal qualifications, but a strong work ethic, a positive attitude and an ambition to grow.
We aim to give realistic lead-in times to enable you to plan your workload and fit around your other clients. Works packages are generally for weeks rather than days.
