Following our previoust post we thought it would be great share this garden transformation - From Mud to Magic! ✨🌾

Back in January 2025, the pond was nothing more than a marked-out hole, with the patio in progress — plenty of mud, machinery, and patience required!

By February, the liner was down, the pebble edging taking shape, and the first frosty mornings showed off the clean lines of the new patio and pond profile.

Come spring, over a hundred pots stood ready and waiting to go in — the borders around the pond planted up bare, full of promise for the growing season ahead.

By early summer, the transformation was already unmistakable: lush marginal planting framing the water, irises in flower, and the clients resident bronze ducks taking up their spot on the patio!

By August 2025, the whole area had matured into a flourishing wildlife pond — full borders of verbena, rudbeckia, and grasses, with a swing seat and heron statue completing the scene.

And by November, even as the garden eased into autumn, the grasses and seed heads kept the pond area glowing with colour and texture.

Fast forward to now, August 2026, and the border has only grown richer — verbena, rudbeckia, sedum, persicaria, and ornamental grasses like Calamagrostis 'Karl Foerster' all jostling for space around the water, with phormiums and irises framing the pond edge and the bronze ducks still keeping watch over it all.

A brilliant reminder that great gardens are built in stages — and that a little patience through the mud pays off tenfold, year after year. 🦆🌾

One year (and a few months) on, and this late-summer border is absolutely thriving! 🌾💜

We completed the landscaping build on this space late spring last year, and our maintenance team has been looking after it ever since. Seeing the planting mature—from the dense Sedum dome in the foreground to the tall Verbena bonariensis and golden Rudbeckia framing the pond—is the best part of what we do.

Late summer is all about keeping borders balanced: deadheading to prolong late blooms, edging lawns to keep lines sharp, and ensuring wildlife ponds stay clear as surrounding foliage fills out.

When a garden is built with proper soil prep and cared for with expert horticultural knowledge, it doesn't just survive—it gets better every single year.

🌻 Bloom of the Week: Jerusalem Artichoke

Tall, cheerful, and buzzing with life — this week's bloom of the week is the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus). Related to the sunflower, its bright yellow daisy-like flowers open in late summer and are an absolute magnet for pollinators, as this happy visitor clearly agrees! 🐝

Even through this heatwave, it's kept blooming beautifully — a good reminder that its sunflower relatives are naturally heat-tolerant, though it'll still reward a drink of water in prolonged dry spells.

Beyond the flowers, it's a plant that keeps giving — the knobbly tubers below ground are edible too. Just bear in mind it's a vigorous spreader, so it's best suited to the back of a border, a screening spot, or a contained bed rather than mixed in among more delicate perennials. Give it room to do its thing and it rewards you with height, colour, and a genuine pollinator hotspot.

Have you grown Jerusalem artichoke in your garden? 🐝🌼

🐝 Help your pollinators through the heat

Prairie-style plants like Echinacea, Helenium, Eupatorium and Veronicastrum will really benefit from a good drink in this hot, dry weather. It helps their flowers last longer — which means more food for bees and other pollinators when they need it most.

💧 Water directly at the base of the plant so none is wasted. Plants can often tolerate drought, but combined with scorching heat, the damage adds up fast.

Every sloped garden has its own character. 🧱🌿

This project took a different approach — red brick retaining walls, matched to the house itself, stepping the garden up into level tiers, with a wildlife pond and rockery tucked into a sheltered corner — the perfect spot to sit back and unwind.

Bespoke oak trellis panels line the side path, screening the garage and garage path from view, with a sleeper-style water feature marking the property's side entrance.

At the garage itself, a bespoke oak gate and matching low brick wall complete the look — solid, secure, and finished to match the brick throughout, adding privacy and peace of mind alongside the kerb appeal.

Planting was kept to a minimum by design, at the client's request, to allow them to complete the softscaping themselves.

Whether it's contemporary or classic, the goal is always the same: a garden that works with the slope, not against it.

Tiered Terraces, Transformed 🌿 Sloped gardens can feel tricky — but with a bit of clever design, they're full of opportunity.

This multi-level design uses brick retaining walls with six-sided sandstone coping to break up the gradient into usable, level spaces.

Raj Green sandstone paving and wide steps connecting each tier, guiding you naturally through the space — and as the planting establishes, these routes will soften further into the garden, feeling less designed, blurring the line between hard landscaping and planting.

A slate sphere water feature, set into a bed of natural pebbles, adds a calming focal point to one of the planting beds.

Behind the finished look, there's serious groundwork involved — reinforced concrete foundations and steel rebar give the retaining walls the strength to hold back the sloped ground safely and permanently, while each tier is built up in engineering block before being faced in brick to match the finished design.

From initial concept to the final bloom, every great outdoor space starts with a thoughtful plan! 📐✍️

When designing a garden, it’s about so much more than just putting paving down—it’s about how you live in the space and how the plants will thrive for years to come.

For this phased project, we planned out:

🌿 A formal front garden & courtyard using natural Indian Stone and York stone to keep that classic local charm.

🌊 A natural pond & woodland walk featuring indigenous planting, cobble borders, and native wildflowers to boost local biodiversity.

🍇 A productive kitchen garden complete with timber-edged fruit & veg beds, greenhouse space, and trained fruit trees.

🌸 A peaceful Japanese-inspired courtyard garden featuring subtle up-lighting and delicate Acers.

Whether you’re looking to transform a small courtyard or roll out a full multi-phase landscape, our team brings deep horticultural expertise to ensure the right plant goes in the right place. Plus, for complete peace of mind, all our full landscape installations are backed by our 5-year warranty.
