The four main station access gates at the Canary Wharf Elisabeth Line station have failed, for the second time. These gates are 3.4m high and 15m wide, and the current gates are just too big and heavy which, together with a bad design of the tracks, has left them susceptible to damage.

Spoortech have won the contract to replace these with a new SR2-rated system manufactured by Trellidor in South Africa. Although it is a long way to get the gates from SA, Trellidor have decades of experience in providing security, especially with collapsible type gates, born from the harsh environment of the South African crime culture, and they now have a world-class product.

However, adapting an existing structure to work with a new product requires some careful alteration to the structural supports, floor and top tracks and the storage units. This is where Spoortech excel and similar to what we did at Paddington station, we have designed new support steel and cladding that integrates seamlessly with the existing station.

The finished product will look like it was part of the original construction, it will be secure, easy to operate and most importantly, it will be robust and reliable.

We’ve been putting our Volvo FM500 to great use over the past few weeks 💪

Here’s another successful installation of a CAT Ladder at Chalfont & Latimer Underground Station. Our Volvo FM500, equipped with a Fassi F820RA, handled the lift with ease—demonstrating both power and precision on site.

Once the ladder was in position, the SpoorTech team quickly got to work, securing the CAT Ladder to the signal gantry efficiently and safely.

Great teamwork all around and another job well executed 👏

Another great example of teamwork, planning and precision engineering in action.

We recently completed the replacement of a defective canopy rafter, edge purlin and dagger boards at Fairlop Station, restoring the structural integrity of the platform canopy after timber decay had been identified.

This was a challenging piece of work carried out in a rail environment, requiring careful sequencing, well-planned temporary works and a carefully controlled lifting operation.

🔧 Key steps

• Installing two temporary beams to safely support the canopy
• Removing the existing structural rafter
• Using our Hiab crane to lift the new rafter from the car park, over the platform and into its final position
• Jacking the roof back to its correct level
• Replacing the edge purlin and installing new dagger boards and trims

Before installation, the new timber members were engineered and profiled in our yard to match the exact profile of the original beam, ensuring a true like-for-like replacement while maintaining the appearance and integrity of the existing canopy structure.

🌳 Materials

• D30 Structural Oak – rafter and edge purlin
• Accoya timber – dagger boards

🎨 Protection and finish

All timber elements were prepared and treated with:
• 2 coats of Tikkurila Ultra Primer
• Tikkurila Ultra Matt Paint

Working on railway structures like this requires a balance between preserving the original design and delivering long-term durability, and the team did a fantastic job delivering this safely and efficiently.

👏 A big thank you to everyone involved in planning, fabrication, lifting and installation.

Projects like this are a reminder that some of the most important engineering work is the work people never notice — but it keeps the railway safe and running every day.

We are proud to have been involved with the Thames Tideway Tunnel central section from the very first designs, to fluming and diversion, and currently working to handover and train long term maintenance crews, and still on site with our people and plant to undertake critical maintenance works.
All of our confined space crews have decades of experience in high risk situations and have an unmatched knowledge of the infrastructure, and the requirements for keeping it running reliably.

We’re pleased to have successfully completed essential platform refurbishment works at West Ruislip Station for Transport for London

The scope of work involved replacing all defective nosing cement bedding across both the westbound and eastbound platforms, which together span approximately 265 metres and incorporate a total of 292 PC30 nosing slabs.

The existing platform surface comprised ground-bearing brick paviour slabs (65mm thick), laid on an approximate 85mm cement bedding over 8mm steel plates.

Our team at Spoortech carried out the following works:

🔹 Removal of the defective cement bedding
🔹 Cleaning and preparation of the underlying steel plates
🔹 Replacement of the bedding Mortar
🔹 Reinstatement of the PC30 nosing's

Working adjacent to Ruislip Depot meant operating within a restricted working window during each Engineering shift. Despite this challenge, all works were completed safely and ahead of programme.

A great result was delivered through careful planning, collaboration, and efficient ex*****on by the site team.

This past weekend saw us install new manually deployed active flood defenses at Plumstead and North Woolwich Portals, for our client Rfli. These defenses will provide flood mitigation that could otherwise lead to flooding of Woolwich station via the running tunnels.
A big thank you to all our suppliers and partners, and our top class Spoortech people, for their quality first ethos and dedication, that always helps to deliver a productive and safe weekend.
