It was more than 15 years ago when I went to do a small job for an architect in Cardiff and I was handed a SPAB magazine. I was hooked by it but, also discovered the lack of knowledge in working with old buildings. I took the journey of part time studies in surveying at University of Glamorgan and then undergraduate USW as it became. When I finished the undergraduate I adapted the practice to persue woodworking repairs and replications on old buildings…There was more to learn about the historic buildings and environment. In 2015 I enrolled into a Masters on Conservation of Historic Environment at BCU, probably the best study I have ever done to help my practice. I have meet great people along the way! Here we are now spab1877. Ps. Come and say hello on the 7th of December (Tudor Lane Workshops Christmas Open Day)

Church doorway finally went in couple of weeks ago following the key extended and replication for extras. This is probably the largest ‘one item’ crafted by the practice.
Decorative hinges went through a restoration and repairs before priming them with iron oxide primer (Brouns & Co) linseed oil and paint. They will be finished with the same paint as the doorway. Will try to update you when all is finished.

Thank you to everyone involved!

St Andrew’s High St in Llandaff finished in August! Restored and enhanced the windows. Replicated a a doorway at the rear of the house to the best of the knowledge we had in terms of scale and detail. Replicated some sashes that had gone beyond repair and enhanced energy efficiency! However, most of the woodwork was repaired and restored! This is the best way towards improving environmental credentials and saving money in the process while conserving good quality timber!

Our current project in Cardiff circa 1860s has some unique joinery. The meeting rails on sash windows with dovetail joint cuts. We are installing a special single glazing MonoRT+ (U-Value 3.6) on these historic windows as they had lost most of the original glass. Timber repairs on frames introduced to match the the existing timber properties. Bring on the sunshine ☀️
