£250 plug-in solar panels coming to Lidl. But is your home wiring suitable?

You may have seen the recent news about Lidl planning to sell affordable plug-in solar systems in the UK.

These systems allow homeowners to generate electricity from sunlight and feed it into their home’s electrical installation through a socket.

It’s an interesting idea and could help households reduce their electricity bills.

However, there’s something important to consider before plugging one in.

Unlike a normal electrical appliance, these systems can feed electricity back into your home’s wiring.

This means your existing electrical installation and safety devices need to be suitable.

Electrical Safety First has raised concerns about older electrical installations and recommends that circuits used for plug-in solar have at least a Type A bidirectional RCD.

Some older properties may have no RCD protection at all, while others have older protective devices that may not be suitable.

The condition of the wiring, socket outlets, earthing and existing circuit loading should also be considered.

Our advice is to have your electrics checked before buying or connecting one of these systems.

🏠 Landlords: two electrical safety facts you may find useful.

💡 Did you know an EICR doesn’t test the appliances you provide? It covers the fixed electrical installation, including the wiring, sockets and consumer unit. A supplied fridge or washing machine needs separate attention.

💡 Did you know an older consumer unit doesn’t automatically mean an unsatisfactory report? The electrician assesses its condition and the safety of the installation. Age alone doesn’t decide the result.

Keep your EICR and certificates for later electrical work together, and ask tenants to report hot sockets, damaged fittings or repeated tripping promptly.
