Progress pictures from our very special project in Highbury.

Featuring a gloriously overgrown clover lawn, some very tasty reflections courtesy of Tom Faulkner Them Outdoors and lots and lots and lots of new plants to soften our wonderful clients dry stone walled garden.

The heatwave survivors (so far). Barely watered (the ultimate gardening flex now), and doing well in the drought.

I thought I'd share some observations.... As I'm so interested to hear what's working for other people too?

Here's what's working for us, here in South west Wiltshire....

- lush soil. We inherited an overgrown garden and have edited and replanted for the last 2.5 years. But thanks to previous owners the soil is loamy, lovely and the new plants have been happy. Even two new sorbus planted last autumn are managing with only the odd bucket.

- no new planting since March.

- layered planting - tall grasses (planted 18 months ago) give shade to smaller plants. Roses and the new trees create more shade.

- Editing not restarting. We have slowly added to and edited this bit of the garden, disturbing the soil as little as possible and not creating vast new planting areas. That's helped the new plants establish in the mix.

- Self seeders - Origanum and some carefully edited plantago have been allowed to fill in gaps. More ground cover.

- Taxus. Part of the hedge was new last year, when I did have to water it regularly. This year it's barely been touched and has just got on with it, like the lovely mature existing hedge which is thriving on nothing. Admittedly our new plants haven't grown much but they're still green so I'll take that.

- Mulch, obvs.

- North facing garden - only gets morning sun and avoids the late afternoon / evening scorch.

- I did give the birds fresh water though - no hosepipe ban in Wiltshire on the horizon...

More lessons to be shared from the back garden soon.... Which is a desert but with reasons to be hopeful.

Our designs always always start with trees -- THE most elegant shade solution imo -- and I also spoke about how to use water to beautiful, relaxing, calming effect (see last pic for a peek into our nearly completed Highbury garden Them Outdoors Tom Faulkner)

Also featured: our North London garden for Brandon Schubert (where I lost count of how many trees we put in) and the pastoral idyll that is the Milking Parlour. Online now and linked in stories.

Snippets from indoors and outdoors at our Notting Hill project with sublime interiors by Scarlett Supple (Studio Supple).

This project was installed just before we launched Them Outdoors and you can see quite a few pieces from the collection made the cut. Reclaimed terracotta tiles connect the kitchen to the garden.

I'm always jealous when I work with interior designers as their design is instantly ready to photograph,while we wait years for gardens to mature. But as I get older I'm getting a bit more patient. It helps to have friend and frequent collaborator

Our French Odyssey ~ Over 2000km in ten days ~ from Normandie to Provence, via vineyards, olive groves, mountains, lavender fields, sleepy towns, winding (largely not toll) roads, beach walks, river swims, babes in nowt but nappies, and a lot of fromage / baguette / beer stops along the way.

Home with a car full of wine and four very happy roadies. Now awaiting my PhD for eye spy wizardry and excellent delivery of car snacks.

Thinking about gardeners, and how important they are. For something I'm working on at the moment ✏️

Our Reimagined Country Garden project is thriving - thanks to a brilliant new gardener, and the close working relationship he has with our client.
