Project Update: Banwell Extension Now Watertight! 🏛️
📍Banwell, North Somerset

Another major milestone reached on our wrap-around extension beside the remains of a Roman fortress… we now have a watertight shell! 🙌

At this point, with the amount of water that’s been around lately, we’re surprised no one has asked us to build an ark instead! 🚢😅

The structure is now secure with:
✔️ External roof structure completed with interlocking concrete tiles, incorporating a dry ridge and hip system
✔️ uPVC windows installed alongside aluminium bi-fold doors
✔️ Timber suspended floor structure completed, ready for insulation and underfloor heating installation
⏳ Render finish pending — slightly delayed thanks to the ongoing South West “monsoon” season ☔
⏳ Surface water management system still to be installed as part of the final external works

All elements are progressing in line with the programme as we move steadily toward completion.

Every stage of the build to this point has been formally inspected and signed off by North Somerset Building Control. As part of our complete, all-under-one-roof service, ELR manage the entire compliance process — coordinating inspections, ensuring regulations are met, maintaining documentation, and liaising directly with Building Control officers so our clients don’t have to.

It’s another example of how we remove complexity from construction. One team. One responsibility. One seamless process. 🏗️

Project Spotlight: Structural Investigation & Remedial Works (Ongoing) 🏗️

Last summer, a client approached us after noticing deflecting ceilings beneath their flat-roof dormers following the installation of solar panels.

Our sister company, ELR Building Surveying and Consultancy Ltd, carried out a detailed investigation and confirmed that the roof failure was caused by the additional load from the solar panels. Their RICS Structural Report, supported by structural calculations and photographic evidence, clearly linked the solar installation to the deflecting ceilings and provided a range of fully costed remedial solutions.

The client then appointed ELR Construction Group to design and deliver the remedial works, which are now well underway. The works will:

✅ Feature a new structure calculated to accommodate the additional loads imposed by the solar panels, allowing for the safe reinstallation
✅ Restore structural integrity
✅ Improve ventilation and thermal performance
✅ Ensure full compliance with current Building Regulations

• Competent in structural calculation software
• Excellent technical writing and communication skills

• Full UK driving licence and access to own vehicle

🔦 Project Spotlight: Extension Beside a 400BC Roman Fortress 🏛️

📍 Banwell, North Somerset.

We’ve kicked off a unique 60m² wrap-around extension in Banwell, made especially interesting by its location adjacent to the remains of a Roman fortress dating back to around 400BC.

Due to the archaeological sensitivity of the site, all excavation works have been completed under full archaeologist supervision from the very beginning.

👀 Bonus challenge: Spot Archaeologist Andrew on-site! He was there inspecting every single scoop for potential bones, pottery, and Roman artefacts — you could say he came, he saw… he asked us to stop digging again!!🏺😆

During the design phase, we identified that several mature apple trees nearby would require foundation depths of around 1.7m in certain areas. Once excavation began, the high local water table confirmed that traditional deep trench foundations wouldn’t be the most suitable option for this project — and we were one step away from building Roman baths! 🛁

💡 Thanks to our all-under-one-roof service, we were able to adapt quickly and effectively.

Within 24 hours, we produced a revised design and structural calculations for a raft foundation solution, keeping the project running smoothly. Although a design change was required, our integrated approach ensured a streamlined, well-coordinated, and cost-effective process for the client.

This project offers a rare mix of technical challenge and historical significance — and we’re excited to share more as the build progresses. 🧱✨
