Whitby residents can enjoy free entry to Whitby Abbey during this year’s Fish & Ships Festival. ⚓

Locals weekend is on Saturday, 16 and Sunday, 17 May. It’s a great chance for locals to climb the famous 199 steps, explore the Gothic ruins, and enjoy the stunning coastal views.

You can also learn about the myths, legends, and stories that make Whitby Abbey one of the town’s most memorable landmarks.

This offer is for residents with YO21 and YO22 postcodes. You don’t need to book ahead, just walk up and show proof of address, like a driving licence or council tax bill, when you arrive.

Whitby Abbey closes at 5pm, with last entry at 4:30pm.

Is it just us, or is the government actually telling us to turn off the lights and go to bed? 🌌

If you’ve been following the latest UK Dark Skies Policy, you’ll know that "The Great British Blackout" is becoming a very real (and very beautiful) thing. The government is finally catching on to what the owls have been screaming about for years: Light pollution is a mood killer.

🌠 Why the North York Moors are winning at "Darkness"

The North York Moors National Park Authority aren't just sitting in the dark for fun. They are officially an International Dark Sky Reserve. That means they have some of the strictest planning rules in the country to keep the sky looking like a glitter factory explosion rather than a hazy orange smudge.

The Policy in a Nutshell:

Shield those bulbs: If your outdoor light is bright enough to be seen from Mars, the planning office might have a word.

The "Right Light" Rule: It’s all about pointing the light down where you walk, not up where the aliens live.

Biodiversity Boost: Apparently, moths and bats also appreciate not being blinded by your 500W security floodlight while they’re trying to live their best lives.
🔦 The Struggle is Real

Windows: minimising light spill. Did you know you can now get a special type of glass to reduce transmit of light (we can help with this).

The goal isn't to make us trip over our own bins in the dark; it’s to ensure that our kids can actually see the Milky Way without needing a VR headset. Plus, it gives you a great excuse to ignore the doorbell after 8:00 PM. "Sorry, I didn't see you... government policy, you know?"

✨ Join the Dark Side

Next time you’re out in the Moors, take a second to look up. It’s a lot cheaper than Netflix, and the special effects are much better.

Are you local to Goathland?

A small number of housing needs surveys are currently being conducted to see if there is a need for affordable homes, either to rent or to buy, for local people. The Goathland survey runs until 10 May and questionnaires are being delivered to all households in the parish.

There is concern both nationally and locally about the lack of affordable housing in rural areas for local people on average incomes, resulting in people having to leave their village to seek accommodation elsewhere.

The aim of a housing needs survey is to establish whether there is a need for any affordable housing for local people in a specific area. If a need is proven, it will help determine the number and type of properties that are needed and identify potential sites. Many high-quality affordable housing schemes for local people have been built in parishes across the National Park, with homes occupied by people who have a local connection to their parish.

If anyone with a local connection to Goathland parish is in housing need and would like to complete a questionnaire, it can be completed online. Please find the link in the comments.

Alternatively, a paper form can be obtained by emailing [email protected].

Please complete one form for each household in housing need.

Thinking of extending your home but would rather wrestle a seagull than deal with a full planning application? Enter the homeowner's holy grail: Permitted Development! 🏡✨

For those not in the know, Permitted Development (PD) rights are essentially the Government’s way of saying, “Go ahead and build that kitchen extension, just don’t build the Taj Mahal and block Dave next door’s sunlight.” ☀️

Under PD rules in England, you can often add some serious square footage to your dwelling—think a snazzy single-storey rear extension or a cheeky loft conversion—without the agonising wait for the local council to rubber-stamp your dreams.

Before you start mixing the cement, there are a few golden rules:
🧱 Keep it coordinated: Your materials usually need to match the existing house (sorry, neon pink cladding is out).
📏 Size matters: There are strict limits on height, width, and footprint. You're building a sunroom, not an airport terminal.
🛑 "Special" dwellings: If you live in a flat, a maisonette, or a cottage that Henry VIII once sneezed in (Listed Buildings / Conservation Areas), the council says absolutely not.

Always double-check the rules before you start knocking down walls!

Have you unlocked the magic of Permitted Development yet, or are you still dreaming of that extra space? If you’re still confused, get in touch with us and we can discuss your project in more detail!
