The Cycle Hub - Fryupdale

Set within the stunning landscape of Fryupdale, this Cycle Hub is a great example of how thoughtful design can create a building that feels at home in its surroundings.

The development combines a welcoming café and social space with a practical, contemporary design, while making the most of the spectacular views across the surrounding North York Moors.

Natural materials, simple forms and generous glazing help connect the interior with the landscape beyond, creating a bright and inviting space for visitors to relax, refuel and enjoy the setting.

We love seeing how good design can support tourism and recreation while responding sensitively to such a beautiful landscape.

More than just design | Supporting our local community 🌿

At BHD Design, we’re proud to be part of the local community, and we’re particularly proud to be trusted by local organisations to help bring their important projects to life.

From the Cycle Hub in Fryupdale to a church in Cleveland, we’ve had the opportunity to work on projects that are about more than just buildings. They’re about creating spaces that can bring people together, support local communities and have a lasting positive impact.

As a long-established practice based in Whitby, local knowledge and strong relationships are at the heart of what we do.

Whether it’s a community project, a new business, a home extension or a larger development, we’re always happy to explore the possibilities and offer friendly, practical advice.

Another day, another site visit.

There's only so much you can understand from a drawing. Being on site allows us to experience the surroundings for ourselves, look at views, levels, access and the relationship between the existing buildings and landscape.

And sometimes, you simply need to see a place in person to start imagining what it could become.

Thoughtful design begins with understanding the place.

From sketch to reality ⏩

What happens between the initial idea and the finished building? Quite a lot!

At BHD Design, the design process is about exploring possibilities, testing ideas and finding the solution that works best for the client, the site and the surroundings.

We might start with a simple sketch, develop several different options and refine the chosen design before moving towards planning and technical drawings.

It's a collaborative process, and sometimes the most exciting part of a project.

Because you never know where that first sketch might lead...

Garden design is about much more than choosing beautiful plants. It’s about understanding how a space will be used, how it connects to its surroundings and how thoughtful design can bring it all together.

From private gardens and larger residential developments to town parks, Emma brings a creative approach alongside the technical knowledge needed to turn ideas into practical, considered landscapes.

Every garden is different, and that’s what makes the process so interesting. Whether you’re starting with a blank canvas or looking to completely rethink an existing space, there are always possibilities to explore.

Designed in Whitby. Working Further Afield.

We're proudly based in Whitby, but our work hasn't always stayed close to home.

Over the years, our projects have taken us across Yorkshire and much further afield, including Guildford, Sheffield and Plymouth.

We've worked on everything from family homes and bespoke new builds to commercial developments, public buildings and landscape schemes.

Different places bring different challenges, but our approach remains the same: understand the site, listen to the client and explore the possibilities.

Proudly designing across Whitby, the North York Moors and beyond.

There's something about autumn that makes you notice your home differently.

As the evenings get darker and we're spending more time indoors, those little things that don't quite work can suddenly become much more obvious.

The kitchen feels cramped, there's nowhere to work from home, the garden isn't being used as you'd hoped, or perhaps you've simply outgrown the space.

If you've been thinking about making a change, autumn is a great time to start exploring your options.

Don't wait until spring to start planning.

A little musing | Rethinking those unused corners

A great example of meadow planting helping to nurse newly planted trees as they establish, next to the new McDonald’s in Malton.

Rather than filling an awkward corner with lumps of cut turf that aren't really suitable or safe for play, why not make it something more interesting?

A meadow-style planting scheme brings colour, movement and wildlife, and there's something much more enjoyable about watching the bees and birds making the most of it.

It’s a good reminder that not every piece of landscape needs to be a perfectly manicured lawn. Sometimes, letting planting do its thing can create something far more valuable for people and wildlife.

Good landscape design is about making the most of every space.

Planning a project? Start with a feasibility check.

Before getting too far into the design of a project, it's worth understanding what's actually possible.

Things like planning policy, the site's surroundings, access, neighbouring properties, listed status and Building Regulations can all influence what you can do.

A feasibility assessment can help identify potential challenges early and explore the opportunities available before you commit to a particular design.

At BHD Design, we can help you understand your options and provide practical advice from the outset.

Not sure where to start? Let's have a chat.

A little inspiration from a recent visit to Filey…

We spotted this brilliant little secret garden hideaway tucked away right on the main strip. Despite being so close to the hustle and bustle, clever planting and thoughtful design have created a secluded spot to sit back, enjoy the sunshine and escape for a while.

We love finding inspiration in the places and spaces around us, and seeing how other designers use planting, boundaries and clever layouts to create little pockets of calm.

Sometimes, the best ideas are right on our doorstep.

What spaces have inspired you recently?
