This week we were excited to see the bottom bar at The Dolphin in 'Bay reopening after a marvellous refurbishment.
The colours pack a punch and the recently revealed stained glass windows (that have been covered up for years), look stunning from inside.

Gareth helped with the planning on this heritage asset (a Grade II Listed Building in the heart of the Robin Hoods Bay Conservation Area).

Every home tells a story, and this stunning new build on Ruswarp Lane, Whitby is no exception.

Working closely with the client and Neil, this bespoke home was designed to make the most of its incredible setting, with carefully framed views across the Esk Valley, the iconic viaduct and Whitby Abbey beyond.

The client has a real passion for contemporary design and high-quality materials, often choosing features well ahead of the latest trends. The result is a striking home that's full of character, cleverly balances privacy with panoramic views, and is a real eye-catcher on Ruswarp Lane.

It was a pleasure to revisit the completed project and see what was achieved through creativity, collaboration and thoughtful design.

Meet Gareth 👋

Gareth started his architectural journey with BHD back in the early 2000s.

Over the years he's worked on schools, hospitals, commercial developments and homes across Yorkshire and beyond. But ask him his favourite projects... and he'll often say it's the family extension that completely changes how people live in their home.

For Gareth, good design isn’t about making things bigger or more expensive. It’s about making spaces work harder, feel better, and suit people’s lifestyles. That’s the thinking he brings to every project.

Sometimes the best design is the design that blends effortlessly into its surroundings.

We spotted this setting at Partridge Nest, carefully designed to sit quietly within the landscape, nestled amongst the trees with breathtaking views across the valley. Surrounded by ferns, wildlife and grazing cows, it offers their guests a true escape into nature without compromising on comfort or style.

Creating buildings that work in harmony with their environment is something we're passionate about, and we'd love projects like this to show how considered design can enhance both the landscape and the visitor experience.
