Three quick things worth having a look at on your own roof before autumn really kicks in.

First one is the gutters, especially if you've had trees dropping stuff into them all summer. Well worth getting them cleared out properly. Second, have a squint at the flashings round any chimneys or skylights. You're looking for anything that's lifting up or cracked. And third, walk around the outside of the house and just look up at the tiles. Any obvious gaps or slips will jump out at you pretty quickly.

None of it costs anything to check yourself, but all of it can save you a proper fortune later on if you catch something in time.

Right then, here's one that catches loads of people out at this time of year.

Most autumn roof leaks actually start way back in August. All that summer heat and UV takes it out of the tiles, the flashings and the lead work, and while it's all dry you never notice a thing. Then the first proper wet week rolls in and suddenly there's water finding a way in that wasn't there before.

The stuff we normally spot when we get up there is fairly predictable. Slipped or cracked tiles round the edges, flashings that have lifted a touch round the chimneys and skylights, lead that's worked itself loose. All pretty easy to sort if we catch it before winter properly sets in.

Been out on a couple of jobs this week, and you can feel it. A bit cooler in the mornings, leaves starting to maybe lose that fresh green look.

Not moaning lol. Just noticing!

Every year around now, the phone starts ringing about summer damage people didn't spot till the first proper wet week!

This is what happens when roof problems are left for too long...

This roof had deteriorated so badly we could literally pull it apart with our bare hands. It was completely rotten and crumbling, with no strength left in it at all.

What might have started as a small issue had turned into a much bigger and more expensive repair.

Two of the jobs I love doing most: Chimney work and lead flashing.
Old-school stuff. Not many roofers touching it properly anymore, most subcontract it out. We do it ourselves!

Finished, signed off, and the scaffolding is finally down. 🙌

This project included a brand new roof and fresh cladding, completely transforming the look of the property. It's always satisfying seeing everything come together at the end of a job, especially when the finished result looks this good.

Another home protected for years to come and another happy customer.

Second myth-buster of the summer:

Most roof leaks don't start where you'd think.
Nine times out of ten it's not a broken tile, it's the flashing round the chimney, or the lead round a skylight. That's where water finds its way in.

Good news: usually a couple of hours to sort. Bad news: most people don't spot it until there's a stain on the ceiling.
