The UK's most stolen cars list is out, and it's worth a minute of your time even if you don't drive one of them.
The BMW 3 Series tops the latest figures, followed by the Land Rover Discovery, Mercedes E-Class and Lexus RX 450h. And here's the part that surprises people: nearly every vehicle high on that list is a keyless one. Thieves aren't smashing windows and hotwiring any more. They're capturing the signal from your key while it sits in your hallway.
New research found 14% of keyless drivers have already been targeted by a relay attack or an attempt, yet only 22% keep their keys in a signal-blocking pouch. The gap between those two numbers is exactly where the risk lives.
If your car is on the list, that's a reason to act. If it isn't, don't relax completely, relay kits don't check badges before they work.
From 29 October, possessing or supplying relay and signal-jamming equipment becomes a criminal offence, which should start squeezing the supply of these kits. But the best protection is still making your car the hardest one to take: a PIN-to-start immobiliser like the CAN-Phantom stops the engine starting even when a thief has cloned your key, and it's fitted with hidden wiring that leaves no visible trace.
I fit them across the Lake District, at your home or workplace, with dealer-level equipment and over 20 years of experience.
