ECOMOF 2015
QUALMS GROUP attended the press conference for the launch of ECOMOF 2015, 26th of September 2014, which was held at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, in Accra.

The ECOWAS Commission, the Government of the Republic of Ghana and Africa & Middle East Trade Limited (AME Trade) are inviting key public and private sector decision makers in the West African mining and petroleum industries to partake in the first of its kind, the ECOWAS Mining and Petroleum Forum and exhibition (ECOMOF 2015) slated for the 6 – 8 October 2015 at the Accra International Conference Centre, Ghana.

This regional forum and exhibition which has its main theme as “ valorizing West Africa’s Mineral and Petroleum Resources through Regional Cooperation” will gather the highest ranking government delegations from the 15 ECOWAS West African Member States. Organizers and sponsors believe ECOMOF is the only event that will gather all of West Africa’s decision makers in one place and at one time. This could be the chance to meet potential partners as the dynamics of the West African mining and petroleum industries are changing. There will definitely be a lot to participate in as it seeks to create an environment conducive to business development. EBOLA SLOWS DOWN MINING
It is rather very unfortunate that, the unprecedented epidemic, that is testing weak health and border systems across West Africa, is slowly putting on hold, most foreign mining firms and operations in the severely hit countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Some of these firms have gone as far as pulling out most international workers. The current outbreak has sadly sickened more than 1,450 people and killed at least 761, quite a record number of people. The big million dollar question gnawing on the minds of some medical experts in the international community is; “Was West Africa/Africa prepared for this?” “How does it deal with this?” Funnily enough, most Americans, (yes, most Americans, made up of some major players in the entertainment industry) whose geography and history lessons only bother on major surroundings in the states they find themselves in, have gone ahead to issue and print out flyers with the inscription; “Pray For West Africa” What happens to the rest of Africa and the world? They probably would need different set of prayers I guess. Let’s not forget the fact that this disease will most likely spread to the rest of the world if not controlled in West Africa.

Of course, the West Africa outbreak is now the largest in history. So unusual for West Africa as the disease is typically found in the center and east of the continent. The Ebola virus was first discovered nearly four decades ago in Congo, in a village near the Ebola River. Since then, there have been sporadic outbreaks. Even though, there is no specific treatment for Ebola, health officials of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia claim people have recovered from the virus and thus reducing the death rate from an initial 90% to the current 55%, a reasonable percentage. The epicenter of Guinea’s two-month’s old outbreak has forced it to close down its main iron ore reserves. Some airlines in the affected countries have suspended operations.

Something tells me West Africa or better still, Africa is been hugely tested. As far as am concerned, I don’t think the Mining Chambers have issued any official statements. The best mining firms are doing is calling each other to discuss the best response and compare notes, lock down camps and control movements to a minimum. Government officials have stepped up efforts to isolate patients, educate the public, check travelers and tighten borders to prevent the disease’s spread. Everyone seems to be practicing precautionary strict hygiene.

Neighbouring country Senegal has closed its borders with Guinea. Other countries across the region have embraced some form of precautionary measures, including banning the sale and consumption of bats, regional delicacy but an animal believed to be the vector for the virus.

The World Health Organization has warned that the Ebola virus is not airborne, so people would have to come into direct contact with bodily fluids of an infected person. We’ve also been warned it can be difficult to distinguish between the symptoms of ebola and those of malaria, cholera and typhoid fever. Early symptoms of infection include fever, headache, muscle aches and sore throat. Later stages come with bleeding both internally and externally, often through the nose and ears. The disease, which develops within 21 days of contagion, has a 50-80 percent mortality rate. According to the WHO, several vaccines are being tested but none is available for clinical use.

I guess we all need to step up the response and we need to do it NOW. For now we can all adopt the 3 so called golden rules of ebola prevention:
1. Adopt strict hygiene and hand washing practices.
2. Stay away from bush meat for now.
3. Seek medical attention immediately you see symptoms of the disease.
