A Place to Pause

Within Stoa Arsakeio, a nineteenth-century arcade in central Athens, the project reactivates the historic passage as a place for food, gathering, and everyday urban life.

Custom-designed furniture creates an open framework for different ways of gathering, from individual moments to larger groups. At the center, a communal table for forty anchors the space beneath the naturally lit roof.

Crafted from solid oak and stainless steel, the pieces are designed to age with use, allowing marks and patina to gradually record the life of the Stoa.

"Τα Θεόχτιστα: Τοπία και σπίτια στη σύγχρονη Ελλάδα" (God-Built: Landscapes and Houses of Modern Greece) by Crete University Press / Πανεπιστημιακές Εκδ. Κρήτης is a landmark work by architect Aris Konstantinidis exploring vernacular Greek architecture as an organic extension of the landscape. A PILA timeless library staple and a summer must.

Using a Leica and Kodachrome film, Konstantinidis captured the raw soul of Greece, stripping away clutter and bypassing the clichés of commercialized tourism.

At the heart of Loggia House on Antiparos lies the courtyard — a timeless Cycladic archetype . Conceived as a series of interlocking cubic volumes, the house is organized around a central void that anchors daily life, offering moments of shade, shelter, and openness.

Ilias Papageorgiou participated in the special annual conference 'Sustainability in Practice', co-organized by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Architectural Record.

He presented Piraeus Tower as a unique global case study in sustainable design - not only for its energy efficiency strategies, but also its circular economy approach. Its sustainable practices included the full recycling of its former facade and the building's retrofit acting as a catalyst for the rejuvenation and regeneration of the surrounding area.

It was an honor for PILA to take part alongside esteemed colleagues and be inspired by presentations from John Ochsendorf, Professor of Architecture and Engineering at MIT; Juliana Berglund-Brown, Building Performance Researcher at Payette; Anne Whiston Spirn, Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning at MIT; Chris Hardy, Director of Urban Design at Utile; and Merritt Bucholz and Karen McEvoy, Co-Founders of Bucholz McEvoy Architects.
