With our last Youth Woodworking Basics Course finished up, that’s a wrap for this summer!

It’s been a lot of fun seeing all the creativity at work. Our teenage woodworkers did a great job with their self-designed joinery projects made with hand tools. Also some cool projects made with 3D design software and cut on the CNC machine!

We are aiming to run more youth classes, stayed tuned and let us know if you’re interested!

A playful twist on the umbrella stand - your umbrella stand is probably one of the first things visitors see when they come over. So why settle for a boring one?

Inspired by the Chinese puzzle from the Waters & Acland Furniture School online course, I wanted to build something with similar joinery but simplified, and that was when I came across this 3-way half lap joint..? (not sure if that’s the correct terminology). It’s sturdy, load bearing and interesting to look at.

Took me a while to think of a project that could showcase this joint, very pleased with what I came up with 😬

Walnut & Padauk Umbrella Stand -
一個遮架，都可以幾得意。

呢排成日落雨，特登設計咗呢款遮架，全入榫設計，實用得來又帶點玩意。紅花梨木配上黑胡桃木，在灰濛濛嘅下雨天為屋企增添一點色彩。

表面用左Osmo木蠟油防水保護，放室內外都得！可訂造亦可預約工作坊自製。尺寸可以因應屋企玄關位需要而定。

An umbrella stand that combines playfulness and serious joinery.

Love the pop of colour from the Padauk that would brighten up a rainy day. Finished with Osmo UV oil for protection against moisture and sunlight, suitable for placing indoors or outdoors.

I love natural wood tones but when I saw the weirdly symmetrical grain on this piece of oak, I just knew it was too pretty not to be accented.

Simply by mixing vinegar with steel wool, you can create your own iron acetate solution which turns wood black while preserving its natural texture.

Plywood isn’t often associated with nice furniture, but not all plywood are created equal.

I think we should all take a moment to appreciate this beautiful material called Baltic Birch, which is what we use in the Trinity Stool.

It’s structurally stable and strong. It’s versatile and durable. It takes stain well and can be finished smoothly. It opens up a lot of possibilities for the design of a piece of furniture and it pairs beautifully with solid wood.

This isn’t just any plywood, this is the good stuff.

It started off with a simple question - how do you turn an everyday, utilitarian, functional and practical piece of furniture into something more?

It’s often associated with patio furniture, something that can take a beating, or the chair hidden in the corner that you whip out when your friends are coming over for dinner, mahjong or a cozy night in. Why can’t it be a beautiful piece of woodwork?

This will be a journey as I continue to explore new possibilities and techniques you can incorporate into the humble foldable chair.

This chair is available for order and I will also be offering workshops for each version that I come up with. I invite you to join me on this journey and even build your own!

Redesigning is part of the process and there’s never really a “final version”. That’s something I’ve learnt on my furniture designing journey. At times it can feel overwhelming because nothing is ever perfect but I guess that’s part of the fun 😊
