I don’t believe your financial future comes down to cutting one coffee a day.

The bigger issue is this:
Most people don’t give every euro a purpose.

Every euro coming into your account should have a job:
✔️ Bills
✔️ Savings
✔️ Emergency buffer
✔️ Enjoying life

That doesn’t mean never spending money on coffees, lunches, weekends away or holidays.

It means putting parameters around your spending so it stays intentional.

Because without structure, money leaks.
And usually through the small daily spending people never track properly.

Financial planning shouldn’t feel restrictive.
It should feel sustainable.

Would I rather leave my children property…
Or financial education?

Financial education. Every single time.

Because if a child learns:
✔️ How to respect money
✔️ How to work for money
✔️ How to manage money

Then whatever opportunities come their way later in life, they’ll be better equipped to handle them.

Even small things help:
Giving kids pocket money.
Letting them make spending decisions.
Helping them understand consequences.

Money habits start young.
And often, the lessons matter more than the inheritance.

The ESRI recently confirmed something many young people in Ireland already feel:

People in their 20s and 30s may become the first generation worse off than the one before them.

That’s a difficult reality.

🏠 House prices have surged
📈 Buying power has weakened
⏳ First-time buyers are getting older and older

I see the frustration every day from people wondering:
“How are others buying homes and still living life?”

The reality is, housing supply remains one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle.
Without meaningful increases in supply, affordability pressures are unlikely to ease anytime soon.

I shared a reel recently about a couple overspending by almost €1,000 per month.

What surprised me most?
The number of people privately messaging to say:
“This is me.”

Money struggles are far more common than people realise.
But in Ireland, finances are still a taboo topic for many people.

A lot of people feel embarrassed.
Ashamed.
Like they should have it figured out by now.

But often the biggest step forward is simply talking about it.

Whether that’s with:
• A partner
• A trusted friend
• A financial advisor

You don’t have to navigate financial stress alone.

Retirement isn’t just a stop point anymore.

For many people, it’s becoming a phased transition:
✔️ Paying off the mortgage
✔️ Helping children financially
✔️ Working less gradually over time

And one thing I always say to clients is this:

Your retirement years are not meant to be survival years.
They’re meant to be living years.

The goal isn’t simply to “have enough.”
It’s to give yourself the freedom to enjoy the years where your health and energy are still on your side.

That’s why retirement planning matters so much.
Not just for security but for quality of life.

Ireland is often described as a wealthy country.

But many people don’t experience that wealth in their day-to-day lives.

People are struggling with:
🏠 Housing
👶 Childcare
🚌 Infrastructure
💰 Cost of living

And for many families, the pressure feels very real.

There’s frustration because people feel like they’re working hard…
Yet basic milestones like buying a home or accessing childcare feel further away than ever.

These are real financial pressures impacting ordinary households every single day.

One of the hardest calls I get is from someone nearing retirement with no pension in place.

Because at that stage…
Time is no longer on your side.

Your family home might be mortgage-free but it won’t pay you a monthly income in retirement.

That’s why I always say:
Think of your pension as your future employer.

Every time you get paid during your working life, you’re either:
✔️ Funding your future freedom
❌ Or leaving future-you exposed

Retirement planning isn’t about becoming wealthy.
It’s about giving yourself options and a decent quality of life later on.

The earlier you start, the more powerful it becomes.

Would I buy a smaller home now…
Or wait five years for the dream house?

Honestly?
I’d buy now.

Over the last 10–15 years, I’ve rarely seen waiting work out better for people.

The reality is:
🏠 Property prices kept rising
📉 Buying power kept falling
💰 Savings struggled to keep pace

That doesn’t mean rush into buying something unsuitable.
But if the option is there to get on the ladder sooner rather than later, history shows that tends to serve people better.

Sometimes the “starter home” is exactly that:
A start.
