🔥 What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is a highly efficient electric heating system that replaces a gas or oil boiler. It takes heat energy from the outside air (or ground) and moves it into your home — using electricity to do so, but producing 3–4 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity consumed.

☀️ Why solar + heat pump is so powerful:
A heat pump runs on electricity. Your solar panels generate free electricity. The combination means you can heat your home largely for free — particularly in spring, summer and autumn when both solar generation and heat pump efficiency are highest.

Planning permission is one of the most frequently asked-about topics when it comes to going solar. Here's the plain-English guide to the current rules in Ireland.

✅ When you DON'T need planning permission:
Under Irish planning regulations, solar panels on domestic dwellings are generally exempt from planning permission provided:

• The panels are mounted on the roof (not freestanding in the garden/field)
• The installation doesn't increase the height of the roof
• The panels don't project more than 15cm above the existing roof surface
• The surface area of panels doesn't exceed 50% of the total roof area
• The property is not a protected structure
• The property is not located in a Restricted/Special Amenity Area

For the vast majority of standard Irish homes, solar panel installation is fully exempt from planning permission.

⚠️ When planning permission MAY be required:
• Ground-mounted systems (especially larger ones)
• Protected structures or architectural conservation areas
• Large commercial or agricultural systems

One of the most common concerns before getting solar is the ongoing maintenance. The good news: it's genuinely minimal.

🌧️ What rain does for you:
Ireland's regular rainfall is one of the best friends of a solar panel. It naturally rinses away dust, pollen, bird droppings and general grime. In most Irish locations, rainfall frequency is sufficient to keep panels performing well without any manual cleaning.

📅 What we recommend:
One annual system health check — that's all. This typically involves:
→ Visual inspection of panels and mounting brackets
→ Inverter performance check
→ Cable and connection inspection
→ Review of monitoring data for any anomalies
→ Cleaning if unusually soiled (e.g. near a busy road or farm)

Ireland's weather can be dramatic. So what happens to your solar panels during a storm, a hailstorm, or a week of continuous heavy rain?

🌧️ Heavy rain:
Solar panels are rated IP65 or IP67 — meaning they're fully sealed against water ingress. Rain cannot damage them. In fact, rainfall is beneficial — it naturally rinses dust, bird droppings and debris from the panel surface, helping maintain optimum output.

💨 Storm-force winds:
Solar panels and their mounting systems are engineered to withstand winds of 130–200 km/h — well in excess of anything an Irish winter typically produces. Mounting brackets are fixed directly to the roof structure, not just the roof covering, and all installations must comply with Irish building regulations.

🧊 Hailstones:
Solar panels are manufactured from toughened safety glass and are tested to IEC 61215 international standards — which includes withstanding 25mm diameter hailstones travelling at 23 metres per second. Irish hailstones rarely come close to those dimensions.

✅ FACT: Solar panels work on daylight, not direct sunshine. Germany has less annual sun than Ireland — and leads the world in solar capacity. Ireland's panels produce meaningful electricity every single month.

❌ MYTH 2: "Solar panels are too expensive"
✅ FACT: SEAI grants reduce upfront costs significantly. With bill savings of €1,000–€2,000/year, most Irish systems pay back in 6–9 years and then generate savings for 20+ years after that.

❌ MYTH 3: "They won't work in winter"
✅ FACT: Winter output is lower but never zero. December and January still contribute 70–90 kWh/month for a typical 4kW system — and cold, bright days in January and February can be surprisingly productive.

One of the unexpected joys of going solar is being able to watch your system in real time. Here's what your monitoring app tells you — and how to make the most of it.

📊 What your app shows you:

☀️ Live generation
How much electricity your panels are generating right now, in kilowatts (kW). On a clear summer day this could be 3–5kW for a typical Irish system.

🏠 Home consumption
How much your home is currently using. The difference between generation and consumption shows whether you're self-sufficient at that moment or drawing from the battery/grid.

🔋 Battery level
The current charge level of your battery, usually shown as a percentage. You can see it charging during the day and discharging in the evening.

⬅️ Grid import / export
Are you currently importing from the grid (grid is supplementing your supply) or exporting to it (you have surplus)? On a sunny day with low home usage, you'll often see export happening.

📈 Historical data
Most apps show daily, weekly, monthly and annual totals — generation, self-consumption, savings, and exports. This data is invaluable for understanding your system's performance and tracking your return on investment.

🔔 Alerts
If anything in the system behaves unexpectedly, your app will flag it — often before you'd even notice anything wrong.
