This summer has been hot, dry, and frankly a bit relentless on plants. Lawns have crisped, borders have sulked, and most of us have spent more time hauling hoses than we'd like to admit.

One plant, though, has quietly shrugged the whole thing off — Hydrangea paniculata 'Limelight'. Odd, given hydrangeas have a reputation as thirsty, high-maintenance types that wilt dramatically the moment you look away from the watering can. But 'Limelight' is built differently. Its conical lime-green blooms have stayed fresh and full right through the driest stretch, without a single dramatic flop. It comes with two more perks: it flowers on new growth, so pruning is simple and forgiving, and it handles cold far better than most of the family too. A genuinely tough, good-looking choice for an Irish garden.

If you're planning ahead for next year and want something that can take a proper Irish summer on the chin, this one deserves a place on the list.

This is what a freshly planted garden looks like — 90% there, and just in time for summer. The bones are all in place; now we would like a few weeks of warmth to knit it together and bulk it up. We're especially excited about the Acer palmatum 'Fireglow' — its foliage is going to be something else as the season goes on. Do follow along to watch it come into its own.

Big trees, big views, big delivery day. Last April I had the pleasure of planting these stunning semi-mature specimens across a beautiful estate in West Cork, slotting them in alongside mature trees that have been growing here for generations, if not centuries. With expert assistance we managed to unload and plant these whoppers and I'm happy to report they've settled right in and are holding their own.

Love is in the air…

How wonderful to be asked to “help” with the flowers for my gorgeous sister’s wedding—help being loosely defined here as me wresting full creative control and not really giving it back.

The bouquet itself was a minimal mix containing only three species: white sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus), the aptly named Love-in-a-Mist (Nigella damascena), and a flick of Curly Japanese Allium for height and a touch of quirkiness—just like my sister.

The ceremony was genuine, beautiful and moving, set in a venue full of hidden gems and eclectic charm.
And….she loved the bouquet. Or maybe she was just relieved to have something to hold onto while her hands stopped shaking.
A tiny contribution to a beautiful day. Congrats Sis.
