With baby Garner arriving in early January 2026, I’m finally making a start on the heating upgrade in my own house in Glenisland.

We’re going old-school on the pipework with soldered fittings, but keeping things new-school on the tech side. The system will have three optional heat sources:
🔥 Outdoor oil boiler
🔥 Stanley 8 solid fuel range with back boiler
🔥 Solid fuel stove with back boiler

To interlink these safely and efficiently, I’m using an NRG Zone 4 which in my experience remains the most straightforward and robust solution for multi-source systems. System control will come from an EPH Ember kit, while centralised logic and protection will be handled by the NRG LEX wiring centre.

Big thanks to Jens and Harry at NRG Awareness for providing the wiring and heating schematic. Harry and I worked through the design and ended up with a plan I’m genuinely excited to install in my own home.

Heating controls.... When all you had was "all or nothing".
Burning oil till the cows come home.

Hot water, ground floor and 1st floor heating NOW all separate, cylinder thermostat and 3 zone programmer.

You now run everything individually. Cold day? Stick 9n the ground floor heating and only that will get hot.

Cold night? Stick on the upstairs heating and only that will get hot.

Why heat the water if you have an electric shower?

BIG SAVINGS ON FUEL, WARMER HOME!!! More money for pints at the weekend!!

Customer asked me to guarantee a fix and attempts by others had failed.
We agreed to go with a tray.
After lifting the loose tiles we found the wet room tray had split.
Unfortunately I got excited with fixing the supports and fitting the new tray I realised I hadn't taken any photos of those steps.
However, tiles and former out... Support base reinforced and new tray in, glass recommission.
Bish bash bosh... Real nice job!

Heat pump flow and return temperature differential was greater than 15°c meaning it was over heating.
Pump was running fine, so could only be a system blockage.
The debris in the bucket was flushed from the plate heat exchanger and new hoses ordered.
System recommissioned and back up and running. Another delighted customer.

Oil isn't cheap. If your radiators have sludge in them, you may as well just burn the money to warm up. Here we used the power flush machine to remove sediment which built up in a heating system.
