✨ Natural Indigo in Fermentation ✨
Here in Ajrakhpur, the magic of blue begins quietly deep inside these fermentation vats. 🌿💙

Natural indigo isn’t a dye you mix and use instantly. It’s alive. It breathes, grows, and transforms with time. Each vat holds a delicate balance of indigo leaf, lime, jaggery, and the hands that tend to it every day. The bubbles on the surface show that the vat is healthy fermenting slowly to create that unmistakable deep, rich Ajrakh blue.

Every dip, every layer of color, every cloth that enters this space becomes part of a centuries-old process carried forward by our community, just tradition, patience, and the natural alchemy of indigo. 💙✨

Ajrakh is a traditional form of block printing known for its intricate geometric patterns, printed on both sides of the fabric. This ancient craft has been practiced for over 10 generations, using only natural dyes like indigo, madder, myrobolan, pomegranate, lac, and rust iron. Its roots trace back 5,000 years to the Indus Valley Civilization. Each Ajrakh design element carries a unique name and meaning—riyal represents old currency, kharek is inspired by dates, and many motifs reflect the landscape of the region. There are 20 to 24 traditional Ajrakh patterns, each with its own story and significance.

During the workshop, the challenge was to creatively transform these motifs into letterforms.

This workshop marks the beginning of a collaboration between , textile artist Sufiyan Khatri, designer Ishan Khosla ( , and type designer Andreu Balius ( )from Spain , with the support of skilled woodblock makers from Ahmedabad and Pethapur.These letters can also be used in schools, helping children learn both alphabets and the heritage of Ajrakh printing.

This winter presenting delighted ajrakh pattern on silk velvet fabric, velvets show abstract florals, leaves, and intricate geometries repeating in contrasting textures. The loop and pile of the velvet’s base gives a rich luxurious hand-feel and shimmer to the fabric, bringing that extra spark to the jewel like patterns and tones of Ajrakh.
