Meet Komal, a force to be reckoned with! 💪

Once part of the food packaging industry, Komal took a brave step to change her profession. Her roots run deep in the world of the informal recycling sector, with parents and in-laws associated with Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat as resilient waste pickers.

During her training, she couldn't contain her excitement, exclaiming, "As a waste picker, I never fathomed the profound impact I could have on curbing the city's pollution!" 🌆🌍

From never having touched a machine before, today, Komal confidently handles the machinery in the workshop, showcasing her remarkable adaptability and determination. 🛠️✨

Meet Rekha, a true inspiration!

Rekha toiled in a waste depot for a decade, facing horrendous working conditions without proper safety gear. The journey was tough, but her spirit was tougher.

Today, she has risen above those challenges. Working with Protoprint Project, she's become a plastic expert, with an encyclopedic knowledge of plastics and the skill to segregate hard plastics like a pro.

But it's not just about expertise. Rekha now enjoys safe working conditions and fair wages. No more inconsistent payments or hazardous work environments. 🙌

She's also started saving money for her son's education, ensuring a brighter future for the next generation. 📚💪

Kashtakari Panchayat (KP) was established in 2010, to support Pune’s waste pickers and their collectives. KP’s programs are designed to enable access to social protections, provide emergency support, strengthen waste picker livelihoods within and beyond waste management, provide technical support and capacity building, and increase the visibility of waste pickers as frontline environmental workers.

Social Seva Initiatives is a non-profit based in Pune, providing technology solutions focused on social innovation and environmental sustainability.

SWaCH Pune Seva Sahakari Sanstha Maryadit is India’s largest cooperative wholly owned by waste pickers and aims to build a sustainable waste management system for the city while protecting the livelihoods and dignity of waste pickers.

SWaCH Plus Seva Sahakari Sanstha Maryadit is a wholly self-owned cooperative of informal waste-pickers formed to support and upgrade the livelihoods of informal waste-pickers.
