The Corinth Canal is one of Greece’s most impressive feats of engineering, connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf. Carved directly through solid limestone, the canal stretches 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) and dramatically reduces travel time between the Ionian and Aegean Seas. Sailfish are known as the fastest fish in the ocean, capable of reaching speeds up to 68 miles per hour, or approximately 110 kilometers per hour, according to A-Z Animals. This extraordinary speed makes them one of the fastest sea creatures on Earth, able to outpace predators and quickly hunt schooling fish like sardines. Their body is built for velocity. According to Smithsonian Ocean, sailfish have a hydrodynamic, torpedo-shaped design that reduces drag as they glide through the water. Their long, sharp bill is believed to help them cut through currents more efficiently, while their muscular tails deliver rapid bursts of propulsion. One of their most iconic features, the sail-like dorsal fin, can be flattened during high-speed chases to minimize resistance.

On this date in history (July 20, 1885), a decision was made that changed sports forever.

Before this day, football in England was strictly an amateur's game, often played by the upper class who did not need to be paid for their time.

But the game was growing popular among the working class, and many factory teams began discreetly paying their best players to keep them from leaving for better jobs.

This created a major conflict within the Football Association (FA). Some wanted to keep the sport pure and amateur, while others saw the reality that players deserved compensation for their skill and time away from work. ⚽

On July 20, 1885, after intense debate, the FA officially sanctioned the payment of players, legalizing professionalism in the sport.

The decision, however, came with a condition meant to preserve local identity and prevent wealthy clubs from buying up all the talent.

A professional player had to have been born or have lived for at least two years within six miles of the club's home ground.

This ruling opened the door for working-class clubs to thrive and directly led to the formation of the world's first football league in 1888.

The English model of professional sports would eventually become the standard across the globe.

In the 1840s, English mathematician Charles Babbage designed a mechanical computer so far ahead of its time that he was never able to build it.

Known as the Difference Engine No. 2, his plans described a machine of incredible complexity, designed to calculate and print mathematical tables automatically.

For over a century, Babbage's designs remained on paper, a brilliant but unproven concept from a mind working far beyond the technology of his era.

Then, in the late 1980s, a team at the Science Museum in London, led by curator Doron Swade, decided to take on a monumental challenge.

They would build the Difference Engine No. 2 using only the materials and engineering tolerances that would have been available to Babbage himself.

The team relied heavily on the work of scholar Allan G. Bromley, who had spent years deciphering Babbage's often cryptic and detailed blueprints.

After years of work, the calculating section of the engine was completed in 1991. The machine consisted of over 8,000 bronze and steel parts, weighing more than five tons. ⚙️

When they turned the crank for the first time, it worked perfectly, validating Babbage's genius more than 150 years after he conceived it. 🤯

The team didn't stop there. They went on to build the engine's massive printing and stereotyping apparatus, completing the full machine in 2002.

The project was so successful that a second Difference Engine was commissioned and completed in 2008, funded by former Microsoft CTO Nathan Myhrvold.

The successful construction proved that Babbage's failure was not one of design or theory, but purely of the limited manufacturing capabilities of the 19th century.
