रक्तचंदनाची बाहुली:एक औषधी बाहुली

सहा - सात दशकापूर्वी किंबहूना तत्पूर्वीही अत्याधुनिक औषधाची सुविधा नव्हती. आजीच्या बटव्यातूनच रुग्णावर उपचार व्हायचे आयुवैदास महत्व होते. रगद ( रक्ताचा अपभ्रंश ) चंदनाची बाहुली तर पाय मुरगळ्यावर आजीच्या बटव्यातून लगेच बाहेर यायची. लेप वाळल्यावर गरम पाण्याने शेकला की रुग्णास आराम वाटायचा. आजही काही मोजक्याच घरात मध्ये ही बाहुली पाहाण्यास मिळते. माझ्याही घरात आहे पार पंजोबाच्या काळापासुन !
हि भारतात उगवणारी एक आयुवैदीक औषधी वनस्पती आहे. ही चंदनाचीच एक जात आहे. त्यास शास्ञीय भाषेत " टेरोकाप्स सॅन्टलिनस " अरे म्हणतात. अनेक लोक याला उगाळुन याचा टिळा लावतात.
रक्तचंदनाच्या लाकडापासून ही बाहुली बनवली जाते. हाडे किंवा सांधे दुखु लागल्यावर अथवा प्रचंड प्रमाणात मुकामार बसल्यावर ती उगाळून लावल्यास ओढ बसून वेदनेची तीव्रता कमी होते.
मुकामार , शरीरावरील सूज यावर उपाय म्हणून रक्तचंदन बाहूलीचा वापर करतात. मुकामार लागल्यामुळे त्या जागी सूज येऊन त्वचा लाल झाली असल्यास ठणके मारतात. अशावेळी रक्तचंदन सहाणेवर पाणी घेऊन त्यावर उगाळून व त्याचा जाडसर लेप सुजेच्या जागी लावतात व तो लेप वाळल्यावर त्यावर रुग्णास सोसवेल इतक्या गरम मिठाचा शेक दिला जातो.
परंतु रक्तचंदन आणि सफेदचंदन यात जमीन असमानाचा फरक आहे तो कसा ते आपण जाणून घेऊयात. मुळात रक्त चंदनाच्या झाडात लाल रंगाचा द्रव पदार्थ असतो. त्यामुळेच या झाडाला " रक्तचंदन " असे म्हटले आहे. या झाडाचे वाळलेले लाकुडही लाल रंगाचेच असते. चंदन सुवासिकतेसाठी प्रसिध्द आहे पण या चंदनाप्रमाणे रक्तचंदनाच्या झाडाला मुळीच सुगंध येत नाही.
साधारण लाकुड पाण्यात तरंगते पण याच्या उलट रक्तचंदनाचे लाकुड जास्त घनतेमुळे पाण्यामध्ये टाकले असता आजिबात तरंगत नसल्याने हे लाकुड ओळखण्याचा सर्वात सोपा मार्ग आहे.
