HOW DO YOU CALCULATE THE NUMBER OF USERS FOR A BIODIGESTER?
Determining the number of users is very important as it guides you in designing & sizing the right biodigester system for different waste management needs.
Here's a step by step formula of calculating the number of users;
Calculate the number of users for a biodigester,multiply the number of housing units or rooms by the average occupancy per unit (typically 3.5–5 people per home) then match that total population to the system's liquid volume and daily wastewater allowance.
📌COUNT THE OCCUPANTS.
Calculate the number of users by multiplying each residential unit,bedroom or number of bathrooms(toilets) by its expected number of daily occupants(typically 3.5-5 people)
Note;
Always consider the type of property.
Multiply by 3.5 for residential properties & multiply by 5 for rental apartments & commercial properties.
📌ESTIMATE WASTE WATER FLOW.
Calculation Formula;
Total Wastewater(Q)=Number of Users(N)× Average Generation Rate(q).
Where q is standardly estimated at 120–150 liters/person/day in areas with piped water, or roughly 85%–90% of metered incoming water intake.
For example;
Calculate amount of waste water in a 5 bedroom all-ensuite house?
Q=N×q
Q=(5×3.5)×135
Q=2362.5Ltrs of Waste Water

Low-usage Estimate
50–90 litres/person/day
Standard Domestic-usage Estimate
100–150 litres/person/day
High Usage Estimate
180–220+ litres/person/day
📌APPLY TANK CAPACITY RULES.
Use standard sizing metrics where a small 1 cubic meter(1m³ or 1,000 litres) digestor handles up to 5–20 users and scale up accordingly.
📌ACCOUNT FOR PEAK USAGE.
Factor in occasional visitors,staff or high-traffic operational hours if sizing for commercial or rental properties.
