Power sector, being an essential ingredient of the national economy and the human activities, need unstinted attention from the experts. The EESoc panel discussion was initiated with the purpose of serving the power sector with an unbiased and a fruitful discussion regarding a timely issue. An eminent panel of professionals from the industry share their knowledge while improving the awareness abou
t an urgent issue in the power sector among the undergraduates, graduates, professionals and the general public. By considering the well use of the national power sector, the theme for the year 2015 is suggested as "Electrified Transportation -the step towards future”. The panel will discuss what are the feasible options we have in electric transportation and planning to came up with suggestion to improve not only the transportation system but also the electricity demand management of the Sri Lanka. Electrification of transportation still seems a novel concept in the Sri Lankan context. Despite of the many discussions and numerous proposals, the implementation is at a stand-still due to the lack of assimilation of the responsible parties. Electrification of transportation can be subdivided into two main categories namely, railway electrification and electric vehicles. Railway Electrification has been a controversial topic since its very conception, a long time back. Despite various doubts and debates regarding its practical implementation, now the time is ripe for the country to realize this dream of electrified locomotives prospering the national economy. With the recent introduction of electric/hybrid motor vehicles to the Sri Lankan market, many changers can be anticipated during the next few years to come. The perspective of the CEB on Electrification of Transportation essentially makes a salient component of the discussion. The changes that can be anticipated in the power sector of Sri Lanka would be an interesting as well a controversial topic to be discussed. Furthermore, the planning process, initial actions to be taken and the implementation strategy of this new concept would give a complete picture of our future dream. Furthermore, electrification of transportation, if properly implemented, will essentially pave the way towards an efficient and effective mechanism for Demand Side Management. In accomplishing that goal, controlling and standardization of the power supply for the electric vehicles, which can be achieved through enforcing new rules and regulations, new tariff structures etc. will play a massive role. Whilst introducing all these changers, improving public awareness regarding this novel means of Demand Side Management; the electrification of transportation, would surely play magic over the load curve. At present, our country’s transport sector is heavily dependent on fossil fuel. Other than economic drawbacks, this gives rise to many environmental issues as well. Though it is incapable of complete elimination of environmental pollution, a carefully established electrified transportation system will for sure alleviate pollution issues to a certain extent. The time is ripe for the specialists, experts and the authorities to come to the arena with their ideas, views, proposals, arguments, debates… and the list drags on… and on….
