Y’s Home | An Inquiry || Part-2 - Aerial frames, quiet close-ups, and spaces still taking shape....

'Y’s Home' is conceived as a critical inquiry into the contemporary residential building practice of Jaffna, where architecture is often reduced to repetitive Vasthu-based plans and surface-level finishes. In this context, the project questions not only how houses are built, but how architectural value is currently defined within the industry.

What kind of home can architecture produce under real constraints.....economic, cultural, and technical?

This inquiry extends beyond the finished building to the entire building process itself. Working with a tight budget, a basic and locally available material palette, and the realities of a developing construction industry, the project treats limitation as a design framework rather than a compromise.
Workmanship becomes central to this position. In a context with limited exposure to architectural detailing, the construction process evolved as a shared learning ground between design intent and local labour. Details were developed through on-site dialogue, testing, and adaptation, allowing knowledge to be exchanged rather than imposed. What remains is not only a house, but a transfer of understanding within the local building practice.

Planned as a two-phase house for a nuclear family, Phase 01 is now completed and occupied, while Phase 02 will introduce the upper timber deck, library, and landscape in the future. The current condition is therefore intentional, allowing the architecture to grow with time, economy, and lived need.

Y’s Home positions itself as a quiet critique of building houses as consumable products, and instead proposes architecture as process, learning, and lived experience. It asks whether, within constraint, architecture can still create meaning, memory, and responsibility toward the industry it operates within.

In the Details, the essence of our Tryouts || Columbuthurai House - Part III

Through concrete and steel, we explored quiet tryouts , moments where material met hand, and experiment met place. The workmanship of Jaffna shaped these textures, imperfect yet honest, carrying the raw beauty of making itself.

When Nature Becomes the X-Factor || Columbuthurai House - Part II

Over time, when greenery merges with built form, it adds an unexpected dimension....often beyond what we first imagined in the design. Nature has a way of giving life to spaces.

Instead of forcing “tropical architecture” in a dry zone like Jaffna, or adopting a borrowed sense of so called “modernity” imposed by substandard developers in Jaffna, we explored another path.

Our approach is a Platonic merge....balancing modern needs with locally available knowledge, materials, craftsmanship, and especially the unique dry-zone vegetation of Jaffna.

We’re happy to share how this dialogue between building and greenery shapes spaces that are truly rooted in place.

Columbuthurai House

Located slightly inside from the main road in Columbuthurai, Jaffna, this 4450 sqft residence for a doctor’s family takes inspiration from the cultural journey that leads to the site. From Jaffna town centre, the path passes through historic churches and missionary schools established in the late 19th century. Their roof angles, building forms, and distinctive material palettes continue to shape the character of the neighbourhood, with local houses often echoing fragments of these architectural languages.

The design of this house reflects that journey. It reinterprets the spatial and formal cues of the context in a contemporary way, not as imitation but as a respectful continuation of a living tradition.

A key challenge was the level of local workmanship and craftsmanship. Compared to the western parts of Sri Lanka, construction skills and finishing techniques in Jaffna are more limited. Rather than imposing details that rely on unavailable expertise, the house was designed with adaptable construction methods that could be executed effectively by local builders while still achieving a refined architectural outcome.

To adapt to the dry and hot climate of Jaffna, the house was constructed entirely with hollow bricks, allowing better thermal comfort and energy efficiency while celebrating a simple, honest material expression.

Within the site, the presence of mature trees influenced the placement and openings of the house, creating framed views and natural relief in the urban setting.

This project is therefore both contextual and practical, shaped by history, common knowledge, local skills, and the realities of building in Jaffna.
