This single-storey, 4500 sqft home in Halbarawa Gardens, Malabe was transformed from an old house into a light-filled contemporary haven — a contemporary home with the soul of a villa, guided by the concept ‘A Villa Within’. The original house had very little natural light and felt disconnected from its beautiful garden, so the project architect removed several internal walls and raised the roof with a beautiful exposed timber ceiling to create openness, height and a stronger flow of light throughout the spaces.
As the interior designer, I continued this feeling of warmth and calm indoors through a soft, natural palette and honest materials. Timber runs through the home in bespoke furniture pieces and detailing, complementing the elevated timber ceiling. Lime-washed wall finishes introduce a subtle, earthy texture, while brass light fixtures add refinement and warmth. Light drapery frames the garden views, softening the architecture and allowing daylight to gently filter through. Layered rugs, organic forms and comfortable seating create an inviting atmosphere — a home that feels contemporary yet deeply grounded and serene.
The interior scope included the entryway, living and dining spaces, pantry and kitchen, all bathrooms, the master bedroom, kids’ and guest bedrooms, and a first-floor bar and lounge.
