Project: Re-imagining the Sacred Edge

​The Vision: From Enclosure to Engagement

​The revitalization of the Gangaramaya Temple’s Hunupitiya Cross Road facade represents a pivotal shift from an architecture of containment to one of cultural expression. The original "caged" aesthetic,defined by rigid, brightly colored recessed bays served a functional purpose but lacked the spiritual openness and architectural gravitas synonymous with one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic Buddhist institutions.

​Our intervention sought to replace this fragmented visual language with a cohesive, dignified facade that balances traditional temple motifs with contemporary structural
clarity.

The design process focused on two key pillars:

​1. Rhythmic Continuity: We transitioned from the individual "cages" to a continuous, rhythmic elevation. By introducing elevated galleries and refined timber-work, the new facade creates a sense of movement and grace along the streetscape.

​2. Urban integrity: Beyond the temple walls, the project was designed as a gift to the city. By removing the visual barriers of the previous design, the temple now breathes into the street, offering a serene backdrop to the bustle of Colombo 02.

​The transformation of the Hunupitiya Cross Road facade is more than a renovation; it is a redefinition of the temple’s relationship with its environment. By replacing the "caged" past with an open, articulated exterior, we have created a facade that invites contemplation and reflects the timeless beauty of the Gangaramaya Temple.

As you can see, the architecture is strikingly modern, yet it sits gently on the land, letting the surrounding hills and sweeping reservoir take center stage.

The heart of the villa is an expansive living pavilion featuring soaring glass walls that bring the entire lake right into the room. Wrapped in warm wood, polished concrete and quiet tones, it is a space intentionally made for slow mornings and long conversations.

Every corner of the home is crafted to connect you with the outdoors. Each of the four bedrooms feels like a personal hideaway, with the lakeside suites offering direct access to private terraces. It is a place where you can step right outside to watch the morning mist rise off the water; a quiet, exclusive home built for slowing down and reconnecting with what matters.
