Third-year Bachelor of Science in Forestry students had a field practical in Agrobiodiversity, where they spent time in both the forest field and the crop field learning how to measure biodiversity. During the exercise, they established plots of different sizes: 10 m × 10 m, 5 m × 5 m, and 1 m × 1 m.
In each plot, they identified and recorded different types of plant species. Herbs were identified in the 1 m × 1 m plot, shrubs in the 5 m × 5 m plot, and trees in the 10 m × 10 m plot. For each species found, they also recorded their scientific names.
In addition, they collected important environmental information such as the elevation of the area, longitude and latitude coordinates, as well as the soil type and soil class. This practical exercise helped us understand how biodiversity is assessed and recorded in different ecosystems.

As Bunda Forestry Association (BUFA) conducted a tree planting exercise at Mchokera Primary School as part of our commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement.
During our visit, we noticed that the school had very few trees, which meant learners had limited shade and were missing many environmental benefits that trees provide. To help improve the learning environment, we planted several tree seedlings around the school.
In addition to planting trees, we also taught the learners and teachers how to properly plant and care for a tree so that they can continue planting and protecting trees in the future. Educating the young generation about environmental stewardship is an important step toward building a sustainable and greener Malawi.
At BUFA, we believe that planting trees today helps secure a better and healthier environment for tomorrow.

Yesterday, we proudly partnered with Miss Culture Malawi at Malimbwe Primary School to plant 500 seedlings in support of environmental conservation and climate action. The event was graced by Miss Culture Malawi, bringing extra inspiration and excitement to the day. Students, teachers, and organizers came together in a strong spirit of unity, teamwork, and shared responsibility. It was more than just a tree planting exercise — it was a powerful opportunity to educate and inspire young learners about the importance of protecting our environment. By taking this step, we are contributing to a greener, healthier, and more sustainable Malawi, while planting seeds of hope for future generations.
