There are three important things you must understand as a construction engineer or a builder:
1. Measurement: The best way to achieve accuracy.
2. Alignment: The ability to get everything aligned.
3. Level: Vertical and horizontal level, reference level, making reference to datum level, and the ability to make judgmental decisions on anything pertaining to level.
You can't achieve these three major things in construction practical processes without using simple construction tools or machines.
Let's take measurement, for example. We all know that for accurate measurements, an original steel measuring tape must be involved, and your level of understanding and accurate reading must be paramount.
Anytime you're taking a reading, you must be calm and ensure that the reading is 100% accurate. You must have it in mind that 1000mm and 1010mm are not the same reading; always ensure your reading is accurate and exact.
You can achieve this by familiarizing yourself with the tape, taking measurements on your own, and checking your accuracy. This will help you, and you can also ask someone else to help you with marking.
During marking, make sure you use a tiny, sharp object for your marking; the more precise your marker, the more accurate your measurements.
A line/string is one of the materials used to get your alignment, and a steel or aluminum range is also good for getting your alignment. Lines are not meant to get levels but alignment. Laser level machines, total stations, and construction machines can also be used to get your alignment accurately. Alignment is crucial in building construction practical processes, and nearly everything depends on it.
You must train yourself to have an eye for alignment and be able to check your alignment from afar. A laser level machine will also help you get your columns, walls, windows, tile lines, electrical fittings, poles, etc., aligned. That's one of the reasons you must get a laser level machine. You can get one for just 130,000; contact me at 0803 2420675. A total station can also be used for alignment if you understand the technical process.
Level (Vertical and Horizontal)
Level is something you must not joke with at all in building construction, either vertically or horizontally, because it has structural implications on your structure or building. You must get your beam level, column alignment, and vertical level. One of the issues with plumb columns is eccentricity, which can cause structural failure.
Laser levels and leveling instruments are two of the most important simple construction tools or machines for checking anything pertaining to level, whether it's datum level, vertical level, horizontal level, or anything related to datum.
In your endeavor to be at the top of your profession, take the three major processes I discussed here, get all the tools involved, and learn them effectively. Always remember: until you are capable of using simple construction tools on your own on site, you are not yet capable of determining the end result of a project.
