Humans of Tango

Humans of Tango Portraits of tango dancers (and their story) from around the world.

I launched "Humans of Tango" to create an album of interesting people I come across on dance floors around the world. Tango dancers belong to a global community of humans of all races, beliefs, and walks of life, brought together by a shared passion. "Humans of Tango" portrays them before, during, or after the dance experience, showing us one or many aspects of their personalities.

Meet Sarah...
(Somewhere across the USA)

I started dancing tango many years ago when I found out I earned a scholarship to serve as an ambassador of goodwill in Buenos Aires. Ironically, although it was the last place of choices on my application list, the experience forever changed my life, as tango became a lifestyle. I continue in my present day nomadic gypsy life to be a tango ambassador and love spreading its message and making friends throughout the world.

I first learned to follow, then to lead. People often ask me which role I prefer. I usually respond with, “Both. Why choose when you can have the best of both worlds?” In each role we can find masculinity and femininity, give and take, guide and surrender and with both come to a richer, more dynamic understanding.

As many people who dance tango, I find there are phases of love and hate in the drama of its learning experience that pull me close and push away. So what is it that keeps me with it? As both a professional therapist and on a personal level, organically I identified with its therapeutic benefits. Tango with its history, its profound music, its people, and its culture has an incredible capacity to both keep healthy and to recuperate the physical body and mind, improve balance, strength, and memory, and to literally and figuratively heal a broken heart, or to elevate out of crisis or depression. It gives us power to create like God, to play like a child, to transform us to another place or to become the best version of ourselves. It can give meaning, and sense of purpose.

Meet Ada...
(Mérida, Yucatán, México)

In my tango path I’ve learned so many things. At the beginning, I’d never miss a milonga. I became a milonguera in Mexico City. I then looked for the technique and I found an exciting and complex world. I learned a bit about different styles and different orchestras. When I relocated to Mérida I needed tango in my new life, so I started promoting it in my new town, with enthusiasm, as a self-starter. I’ve been trying to create a tango community in my beautiful “white city”.

Today, some things cause me tears, some are sweet, some are sad. I pause and enjoy my pregnancy. I see and I feel a great and luminous force growing inside of me. I imagine he’ll be a tanguero, I imagine he dances with me one day. I imagine he enjoys the violin, the bandoneon, and the bass, just as I enjoy them. I meditate in peace and I tell him I can’t wait to meet him…

"Corre el tren que va a encontrarte,
pero más el ansia mía,
con qué beso ha de besarte mi emoción,
con qué cariño apretaré tu corazón.
Corre el tren que va a encontrarte,
pero más el ansia mía,
y en la dulce ensoñación, de la ilusión,
tu amor me viene a acariciar.
Qué lento corre el tren, qué ganas de llegar…"

(Cleveland, Ohio)

"Face to face they softly greet
Arms hold bodies strong
as passion magnifies with each beat.
Chest to chest souls send stories
down through lines drawn by tangled legs.
Each step caresses and impresses
moments of their lives into the floor.
Painting poems with pointed toes
vivid with truth, but vanishing.
Infinite and expiring all the same.
Created not to keep
but to live again, anew."

Meet Ted...

(Cleveland, Ohio)

"As the music begins she and I embrace. I sense her mood and her response to me and to the music. That is tango. I take the lead, she responds, I adapt. That is tango. We create something memorable, something satisfying, something wondrous. It might be playful, sad, serious, exciting - a nine minute interlude shaped by the music, our connection, our generosity, which we abandon on the dance floor when the music ends. That is the romance of tango.

When I started to learn tango I thought I was learning a physical activity set to music, something like golf with a band. Very quickly that thought disappeared as I realized I was learning a language, a manner of communicating, a way of creating something beautiful to experience and to watch.

At the heart of it is connection, to the floor, to the music and to that other person who has abandoned all commonsense and put herself at risk of my imagination. What I have discovered is that tango can be the most romantic adventure of a life-time, in discrete nine minute slices, which start and end with the music."

As the "cherry on the cake" for what promises to be a really fun weekend, I've decided to do a run of my HUMANS OF TANGO series in Cleveland, Ohio.

I'm looking for 2 or 3 ladies and gents (I'm flexible) who may want to participate. If you don't know how this works, please check out the page (https://www.facebook.com/humansoftango) and feel free to contact me privately if you need more info.

I'd like to do the photo session (5 to 10 min with each HUMAN) on Saturday afternoon -June 18-, after the workshops. We'll find a suitable spot in the vicinity of Viva Dance Studio.

Gracias!

Meet Travis...

"In Tango lives the stories and lyrics of our lives.

Her body moves like silk over me,
around and through me.
There is quiet conversation between us
no one will ever hear.
Words of longing and desperation.
Words of lust and love, of sadness and desire.

These silent words burning like candles into our fingertips, into our shadows, into our sweat. With the music as our guide
Tango is born.

In a moment…Her leg slides naked to the air,
and then rests, waiting, listening, playing.
Here, I hold her and she, in return holds me.
Sharing, trusting and listening.

Our embrace. Our dance.
Our bodies melting into each other as the music fills our soul.
She dances as if to live, and I dance to keep her alive.
Our dance of passion, acceptance and love.
Our heart beat, our breath and the music all become one.

No words…Just tango."
