A family run homestay situated in Bakelalan, a highland village in Sarawak, East Malaysia. Bakelalan is nestled in the heart of Borneo.

Bakelalan Owl House is a family run homestay. It's neither a hotel nor resort, guests actually stay with owners Andy and his Lun Bawang wife, Maureen in their quaint little home set in a picturesque setting. Bakelalan is home to the indigenous Lun Bawang people, an ethnic group in Borneo. It's the perfect place to get away from it all and just get back to basics in a friendly, peaceful and serene

kampung environment. It's also ideal for nature lovers who enjoy trekking, mountain climbing, birdwatching, photography (landscape, nightscape, wildlife, people)....or just plain chilling out. To keep Bakelalan Owl House simple and cozy, it currently can accommodate only a maximum of 8 guests at any one time.

Malaysian rail-babbler (Eupetes macrocerus)

-The rail-babbler or Malaysian rail-babbler is a strange, rail-like, brown and pied ground-living bird. It is the only species in the genus Eupetes and family Eupetidae. It lives on the floor of primary forests in the Malay Peninsula and Sumatra, as well as Borneo.

A special mega lifer for our guest with first target bird – Malaysian Rail-babbler. We have very good view of this bird!

Dear Friends and Followers of Bakelalan Owl House,

Thank you for your prayers and thoughts throughout this period of grief. Your sincere messages of sympathy during our time of loss was a comfort, and sweet confirmation that people were thinking about us. We are grateful for the loving sense of community.

Bakelalan Owl House at this juncture will not be able to accept new bookings until matters have been sorted out. We humbly request for your kind understanding during this challenging period. This however will not affect the confirmed bookings made with Andy Paul prior to his untimely departure.

All future and on-going correspondences with regards to the bookings would be directly with Maureen Saban Andrew only. Bakelalan Owl House has not appointed nor authorised any agent or representative to handle matters on our behalf.

A new record for Sarawak...& all thanks to a 3 year old!

My 3 year old son found this dehydrated 13cm specimen in our drain last year. It came down from the jungle from behind our home, the Bakelalan Owl House, probably due to the prolonged draught we were facing at that time. Revived it by spraying it with some water, documented it, then released it. I sent photos of it to Prof Indraneil Das from University Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), checking if it was a juv. O.everetti. After going through the photos & doing some thorough research, it turned out to be a juv. O.vertebralis instead!

The Dark-spined Kukri Snake (Oligidon vertebralis) is endemic to Borneo & previously only recorded in Sabah & Kalimantan (Smith 1931. Bull. Raffles Mus. 5:3-32; Stuebing 1991. Raffles Bull. Zool. 39:323-362; Stuebing et al. 2014).

In the book, A Field Guide To The Snakes of Borneo, Second Edition by Robert B. Stuebing, Roberf F. Inger & Bjorn Lardner, it says, "Since the 19th century, only 2 specimens have been found, one from Sabah and another from South Kalimantan. Nothing is known about the ecology of this species".

Chanced upon this nesting Sunda Scops-owl (Otus lempiji) a few years back while doing some casual birding here in Bakelalan.

Between Jemry & i, one shot each and a short video was taken at 600mm + 1.4TC. We decided to avoid that part of the forest for the next few months.

The first thing we discussed during the mandatory kopi & teh session after every recce or bird outing was how well camouflaged the little Scops-owl was in its nesting tree cavity. Pretty cool.
