SSE didn’t begin with a business idea.
It began with my Ah Ma(Grandmother).
That year, Ah Ma was 90.
As she grew older, her skin became increasingly dry and fragile, and the itching often left her feeling uncomfortable.
It was especially difficult at night. Sometimes, the itching kept her from sleeping well. She would scratch until the skin on her hands became red and sore.
Seeing her in such discomfort was difficult for us. We tried different skincare products, but we struggled to find something that truly made her feel comfortable.
Then my family and I had a simple thought:
Why don’t we try making a Body Butter for Ah Ma ourselves?
There was no grand plan behind it.
All we wanted was for her skin to feel less dry and for her to sleep a little more comfortably at night.
So we began experimenting and making adjustments, little by little.
Eventually, we created a Body Butter that Ah Ma enjoyed using.
I still remember what she said after using it:
“This is good. It feels comfortable.”
It was such a simple sentence.
But it stayed with me.
Because that was when I slowly began to realise something—
When someone grows older, becomes ill, or requires long-term care, we naturally think about many important things.
Medicine.
Food.
Medical care.
Everyday support.
Of course, all of these matter.
But there are also smaller things that can easily be overlooked.
Things like:
Does their skin feel comfortable?
Later, through conversations with people working in charities and community care, I began to realise that Ah Ma was not the only one experiencing this kind of everyday discomfort.
Older people, patients, and those who require long-term care may also experience discomfort caused by dry skin.
But when there are so many more urgent needs to attend to, these “small discomforts” are often not the first things people notice.
I began to believe:
Some forms of care may seem small.
But small does not mean unimportant.
And from there, something that had begun simply as an act of care for Ah Ma slowly found a name—
SSE.
SSE is short for Ah Ma’s name.
Her name continues to remind me:
Why all of this began.
It wasn’t because I wanted to start a skincare brand.
And it wasn’t because I began with some grand social mission.
In the beginning, it was simply because we loved someone,
and we wanted her to feel a little more comfortable.
Over time, the care that began with one person slowly reached more people.
Today, SSE continues to pay attention to the small comforts that can so easily be overlooked in everyday care.
What we do may not be something big.
A jar of Body Butter cannot solve all the difficulties someone may be facing.
But if it can bring someone a little comfort and remind them that even these small needs are seen and cared about—
to me, that little bit matters.
SSE began with Ah Ma.
From bringing comfort to one person, to extending care to many more.
May the little things we do
help bring a little less suffering
and a little more warmth
to the lives around us.

SSE。
