Information corner on Roles and duties of Trade Unions.
What is a Trade Union?
Defination : It's an organization of workers or employees formed mainly to ;
● Negotiate with the employers on various employment related issues
● Improve the terms and conditions at their workplace
● Enhance their status in society ( improve the economic status of of the employees through a collective action)
● To represent workers at workplace
Rights of Trade Unions
● To recruit new members
● Ask about changes in wages/ work conditions
● Take industrial actions to protect members e.g demonstrations and strikes
Responsibilities and duties of Trade Union
● Not to put pressure on employees to join the Trade union
● Not to make unreasonable demands or threats on employers and employees
● To hold secret ballots, inform employers, take peacefully actions
How members can participate in their Trade Unions?
● By voting for Union Officials ● By attending Union meetings
● By taking part in action ● By paying Union monthly membership fee
● By voting on taking action e.g secret ballots ● By demanding for questions and answers sessions with Union officials
