Security Expert Calls for Regional Restructuring and Bottom-Up Approach to End Insecurity in Nigeria
Abuja, Nigeria — Security expert Ugboma Stephen, of Stone Cold Security, has called for a comprehensive restructuring of Nigeria into six regional zones and a return to true federalism as the most effective path to solving the nation’s growing insecurity challenges.
According to Ugboma, the persistent problems of banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism stem from an overly centralized security structure that lacks grassroots intelligence and local engagement.
He emphasized that “Nigeria must adopt a bottom-up security approach, where local communities, traditional rulers, and trained local security personnel actively protect their environments. This is the only way to prevent insecurity before it grows beyond control.”
Ugboma further advocated for a state and regional police system that allows each zone to develop tailored responses to its specific challenges, while the central government remains focused on international relations and national oversight.
He concluded that “a stronger regional system and a lean but effective federal structure will ensure accountability, peace, and sustainable security across Nigeria.”
