RE-INDEPENDENCE DAY — 1ST OCTOBER

Nigeria became Re-independent from British colonial rule on 1st October 1960, following decades of resistance and struggle against colonial conquest.

We call it Re-Independence Day because our people were not born without history, civilization or sovereignty. Long before colonial rule, diverse societies and political systems flourished across the territory now called Nigeria.

We were conquered, colonized, exploited and subjected to foreign dominance. Colonialism was not the gift of civilisation to Africa; it was a system of dominance and exploitation.

Our re-independence was won through the struggles and sacrifices of generations before us.

Re-Independence Day is therefore a reminder to us and to generations yet unborn: reclaiming political independence was only part of the struggle. The question of economic sovereignty, control of our resources and the freedom to determine our own future remains.
