Did you know some trees fertilize the soil naturally?

Faidherbia (Faidherbia albida) is a nitrogen-fixing tree that sheds its leaves in the wet season—enriching the soil and boosting crop yields. During the dry season, it grows back, providing much-needed fodder for livestock in drought periods.

For years, agroforestry scientists have studied its benefits, proving its unique compatibility with farming systems across Africa. This is why Faidherbia is among the 120,000 native tree seeds CIFOR-ICRAF deposited in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault—to secure its role in sustainable agriculture.

Deforestation is the permanent destruction of forests, usually as a result of Anthropogenic (human activities).Converting them for other purposes such as agriculture, urbanization, logging, and infrastructure development, as well as fuel wood and Chacoal production.

Causes of Deforestation
1. Agriculture: Expansion of agricultural land for crops like soybeans, palm oil, and cattle ranching.
2. Urbanization: Urban growth and development lead to forest clearance for infrastructure and housing.
3. Logging: Timber extraction for wood and paper products.
4. Infrastructure development: Construction of roads, dams, and other infrastructure projects.

Impacts of Deforestation
1. Loss of biodiversity: Deforestation leads to habitat loss and extinction of many plant and animal species.
2. Climate change: Deforestation contributes to increased greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
3. Soil erosion: Trees help hold soil in place, and without them, soil erosion can lead to landslides and decreased fertility.
4. Indigenous communities: Deforestation often affects indigenous communities, leading to loss of traditional lands and cultural heritage.

Solutions to Deforestation
1. Sustainable forest management: Managing forests sustainably to balance human needs with conservation.
2. Reforestation and afforestation: Planting trees in areas where forests have been degraded or cleared.
3. Protected areas: Establishing protected areas like national parks and wildlife reserves.
4. Certification and labelling: Promoting certification and labelling of sustainably sourced forest products.
