β‘ The Earth Wire Is Normally Not Supposed to Carry Current. It Only Operates During Fault Conditions.
The earth wire (also called the ground wire) is one of the most important safety features in an electrical installation. Unlike the live and neutral wires, it is not intended to carry current during normal operation.
Under normal conditions:

* π΅ The neutral wire returns the current back to the power source.
* π’ The earth wire remains idle and carries no current.
So, When Does the Earth Wire Carry Current?
The earth wire only comes into action when there is an electrical fault.
For example, if the live wire accidentally touches the metal body of a refrigerator, water heater, washing machine, or any other metal-cased appliance, the earth wire provides a low-resistance path for the fault current to flow safely to the ground.
This helps protective devices such as fuses, circuit breakers, or Residual Current Devices (RCDs/ELCBs) detect the fault and disconnect the power quickly.
